GTD changeover to R: Review

DSG is a dream in the R as engine really matches up with it well so its so quick and seamless in change and engine response.

DSG is set up correctly for Race, but unless you have a long stretch to push it (as you would expect it holds the gears through rev bands) you might find you will push it into manual (paddles)

Threw key less in more out of curiosity and though could obviously live without it you have to love it also, the button itself is just a  way to start car up.

Rear View camera is my biggest struggle to adapt to, as rarely look at it! Default reaction is still to reverse like always have and still look around over shoulder.

I generally wouldn't go from a car to the same car as I get bored easily but I think the fact its manual to DSG will make it feel like a different car.

I had the reverse camera in my Mk6 that didn't come with sensors so I used it all the time.
So I think I've just got into the habit of using it.
Although it comes into its own when getting in or out of a tight space as I can reverse to an inch or so safely to what's behind me.

Yes, the camera is good for trying to get as close as possible, as you can see the blue of the bumper. But on standard reverse old habits die hard it seems.

Before selecting the R thought maybe should go for another make, and really tried to like the Sportback, BMW and Mercedes but each time they actually pushed me back to the MK 7

Of course there is lots of familiarity with the GTD which loved, but the R fills in all the things you would have liked (not necessarily needed) and so for me its the complete experience now, that removes any feeling of it being the same car.

My wife is not like Rebecca, cars are just cars to her, functional, but you try getting the R off her now?! even she realises she is driving something special.

For example, she came back home the other week describing how she had left some and in her words 'little tw*t' in some souped up 'thing' for dead with biggest smile on face haha, and I was thinking "told you so"

Also originally had the car in 'individual' for her with soundaktor on eco, but when she heard it in race with me behind wheel, she literally demanded that I set the car up for her like that, the R casts it spell on everyone in the end 

Think you have a different perspective to offer though as family that will have had all three performance models and will be running a GTI and an R so be interesting to see what you and wife think .. again, happy collecting

Thanks for the feedback. Interesting that your wife raced "some tw*t" I take it she wouldn't have done that previously 

We've decided to keep the GTD as well. So my son will take that. The neighbours will think we are some sort of Golf fanboys which we aren't really.

I just enjoy a decent car and have looked at other cars but the value for money on the performance Golfs is just too good to give up

She elaborated for me last night and no its not something she has done before and she did eventually let him go past but point was pretty well proven by that point apparently of girls not to be messed with haha,

Not a VW fanboy either, migrated from back to back Quattro to the GTD basically because really liked what they had done with the MK 7 and then the value would be getting IE:able to select new tech such as DSG and DCC for still less than would paid for another manual Quattro with less options.

could have selected from all the manufactures this time around and was really open to Quattro or xDrive but firstly none of the cars ever grabbed me and then when did the maths the MK 7 were coming out at better value.

Staying with the MK 7 became an easy choice in end, and as really wanted AWD again it narrowed very quickly to the R

Would look again at A3 Quattro next time around but unless they really mess up the MK 8 imagine be a very similar process as this type of car and manufacture is my demographic as not one for large cars and at my price point.
