You chaps with GTD's not using the electric supplementary heater to boost your warm air on cold mornings? That comes on when you select a/c on.

Yes got that box ticked on the climate menu.Didn't even know what it did till you told me there!. :embarrassed:
Worth people checking out though.

Sadly my dealer is clueless.  They didnt even know at the PDI if the screen had been fitted or how to turn it on!  I am not sure what on earth the auto function is supposed to do though if the screen never comes on automatically.   I will have to go direct to VW with the problem I guess.

Now i'm beginning to question my sanity!.With this supplementary heater thing, maybe it's that, that is helping my windscreen to de-ice.Maybe i have the same problem as yourself and others.
It would make sense. The heated screen not showing on the consumers list until switched on using the touchscreen. It does de-ice pretty quickly though so it's probably just my imagination.
Next move.Switch on maually then compare to time taken on auto. Then i'll know for sure.
When my car was in for it's first service in September they mentioned that there were a few non safety related recalls/software upgrades that they couldn't do because of 'an issue with our computer system'.'We will do them next time you're in'. Maybe the screen is one of them.

Sadly true. It's like having an  extra button on the dash.'What does that one do?','oh,nothing,it's just there for show'.

Shame they have a policy of removing physical buttons these days - would be so much easier if it was possible to control the screen heating from the centre console like you can with driving modes.

What annoys me is my 2014 Gti had the same heated screen and it did work totally automatically.  In over 2 years of ownership I did not switch it on once manually. It used to sense high humidity in the cabin / temperature differential between outside and inside / if you had pressed the screen demist button on the climate controls, and show up on the econvenience consumers list.   I remember how amazing it was when getting in the car with wet hair seeing the screen heating come on of its own accord.

My May 2016 delivered GTD has exactly the same "issue", in that the Auto switch on setting appears to do nothing.

I still wouldn't be without it though, even if I do have to switch it on manually. Not only does it make defrosting the car pain free (just the side windows to scrape), it means with not having to scrape the windscreen that the screen doesn't scratch as much.

Literally only take a couple of minutes to soften the frost enough that a quick flick wipe completely clears the screen. Wouldn't be without it now - auto function working or not

Yes it does work well.  Nice to see a similar car has the same issue.  If only the max windscreen climate button switched it on, it would be a start lol

Hi

A quick update. My car was at the dealers today having the issue looked at. They found a mug of boiling water below the sensor which it turns out is in the rear view mirror housing on the windscreen, triggers the auto screen function. It is best to test this with the climate switched off. When the screen activates you hear the alternator load on the engine. Nothing shows up on the convenience consumers though, which must be a software issue. Btw once the screen heating cuts in the steam from the hot water will not steam up the screen, so it proves it's working.
Hopefully a future software upgrade may add the screen activation to the convenience consumers screen.

First time i had to switch my heating on manually yesterday (-5) and well iced up.I knew straight away it wasn't doing it's thing.Normally see it within seconds starting at just below the rear view mirror and a little snake of de-icing goodness appearing from the bottom of it.
Along with the (forced to have but never used) advanced telephone prep it has been quite an expensive option.Still love it though.

Thanks for the update, so they concluded the auto function was working sufficiently? Sounds fairly useless if so to me to be honest! Mine has also never come on automatically despite being enabled, although i still love the heated screen even if i do have to manually activate it! It'll probably see some use again this week with the snow coming...
