About to order Gti, what spec?
« on: 29 September 2016, 14:10 »
Further to my other thread about test driving the gti pp I've decided to order one. Was originally going to order tungsten or Reflex Silver but now thinking white is better(less old fella even though i am 42 ). I'm going for dcc, tech pack and parking pack and was going to just leave the standard 18"wheels on. What's everyone's opinions on the 19s? Test car had them on and without dcc was very nice but the roads I drove on were much better than up here in Sunderland. So standard 18s or change to 19s. White or a silver?

I can't really comment on the 18s/19s scenario apart from I like the look of the 19s over the 18s (so much so I bought a set of BBS wheels lol).

Colour wise, I like the white - really suits the car well but silver will still look good. I think it's a car that suits lighter colours more.

You have white currently why not go for a change. What about limestone grey to be different if you like the light colours:

I didn't used to like the Austins but now I think they look less fussy than the Santiagos. If only they did Prets as an option on the GTI.

I've got the 19s, they look fantastic, love them! On the minus side though, there's so little tyre wall that they get scraped on even the lightest meeting with a kerb, the tyres are significantly more to replace than 18s and they are a right faff to keep clean. Also, I quite like the Austins, bound to be a bit better ride (though admittedly I haven't tried them myself), cheaper tyres and look easier to maintain. But would I swap? No.

I don't have DCC but I can understand why you would want it if your roads are poor, but why not go 18s without DCC and save nearly £2k? Could be spent on other toys! Performance Pack is well worthwhile for the better brakes alone but also for the looks of the red calipers.

Congrats on the choice, I love mine but just out of curiosity, what pushed the R out of the equation?

Sorry forgot to say I'm going order PP too. I've actually got a reflex silver Tiguan at the moment which suits that colour (traded the white gtd in last year for it). I think I'll stick to the 18s and it's a straight shootout between tungsten and pure white. Not really a fan of limestone.

I would order a GTI with the standard Austins, they are unique for the GTI, whereas the 19s are on every other GTD you see out and about.

White is the colour to go for on the GTI imo, also the launch colour IIRC...

GTI PP or GTI both come with red calipers...

Yep if you are on the fence with the colour get white and save £500 :)
Or put the £500 toward a sunroof as the white looks great with the black roof.

I've had two white mk7's in a row now and was considering a third (GTD just so I could say I owned all three models! ) so therefore spent far too much time sat at work looking on the VW used car lists to see what colour I'd go for again.
And it was white.
I still think the mk7 looks best in white, even after nearly four years of production I've not got bored of it.
A bit like jeans really, jeans just look right in mid to darkish blue and mk7 Golfs just look right in white. Simple as that.

Extras? Meh, depends on how long you plan on keeping the car and how much money you want to flush down the toilet at the end of your ownership versus how much enjoyment you get out of them.
You pay a good few hundred quid a year for golf club membership or a football season ticket purely for enjoyment and it's the same with extras on a car. It's dead money but but it's your money so if you are going to enjoy something or find it useful then go for it.

I love the look of Santiagos but would hate cleaning them in winter. All those fiddly mini spokes having to be scrubbed with your backside hovering above a puddle of cold water. EEK!

I think if I was to spec again I'd look back to 2013 when I ordered my first mk7 and get exactly the same things. Basic nav which is standard now, PP and park assist (park pack now).
The only change from my April 2013 order would be two extra doors as my garage is very narrow and opening the longer door was a bit of a challenge to get out.

Mind you, I see a tungsten GTI most weeks driven by an older guy with lots of extras on it and it does look smart when the sun is shining.
I'd still go for white though.

God I'm boring.

I know what you mean about the 19s being on everything you see haha. I had white on the gtd and only saw a tungsten golf gtd the other day. Looked really nice and you don't see many of them whereas you see hundreds of white ones.

If I was ordering again and carbon grey was not available, it would be tungsten or black.
I would keep the Austins as well as I think they look superb and they set the GTI apart from the rest of the range.
