I thought exactly the same but it was being used by the sales manager as his car so unless he's totally clueless out just not bothered maybe. It had about 2k miles on it I think certainly wasn't brand new. Ok fact the R had less miles on it.

Car tax changes next year will see a manual R cost £500 at point of sale plus £140 a year if it's registered after the start of April 2017, vs £185 a year for as long as you have it.
So an extra £315 in the first year. Then £45 less each year after. So over 4 years an extra £180. Hardly worth worrying about.

This is Chris we're talking about.

I'm trying to encourage him, not discourage him!  It's an extra £270 if it's only kept 2 years.

The car tax isn't the issue, it's the overall monthly and fuel payment

I have the gti pp and have no regrets about not getting an R, I really wasn't massively impressed with the liveliness of the throttle response on the gti but the pedal box is an easy cheap fix to this, it now feels very quick and to be honest it really would be pointless for me to have anything quicker as the gti gets up to the speed limit so quickly that I can't even use all that power.

You can probably guess that I would recommend the gti over the R but I am really just trying to fight it's corner, there are quicker cars including the R on our roads but the golf gti is a legend and I wanted to be part of that more than I wanted an R badge.

What he said
I know its personal preference but I also think the GTI looks better.

GTI All the way.

The R is a lovely car but looks like a Golf "Match" to me.

Thanks chaps. My colleague actually said yesterday will the gti potentially be worth more when all the cheap R deals cone to an end and flood the market. Seems to be less gti's on the road too where I am.

I'm more interested to hear what a long term GTD driver thinks of the two of these compared to the GTD...

Your GTD is a manual though isn't it?

I think what you probably have found is the GTI is lighter at the front (lighter engine) and will bounce around more than you are used to, whereas the R will feel more planted by virtue of the extra 30kg(ish) over the back wheels.

No chance of that Chris, who is going to pay more for less of a car. There's a reason why the R is more prevalent and  thats because at one point it was cheaper to get your hands on the better car for less money. I doubt there will be a "flood" of Rs, it's still a relative rarity on the road. With the R there will be the demand to meet the supply in the used market, it got high praise in the press and is up there with the hot hatch competition. That hasn't happened in the new car market for the GTI and if you were faced with buying a used R for the same price as a used GTI, i'm sure most would be buying the R.

If VW belived the "rare" GTIs would be highly sought after in the used market they'd be upping their GFVs on them which would make them more enticing as a new car on lower PCP terms as a result.

You need to be asking yourself if you prefer the R to the GTI and if you do, is the extra £80pm to run one worth it to you?
