Thanks chaps. My colleague actually said yesterday will the gti potentially be worth more when all the cheap R deals cone to an end and flood the market. Seems to be less gti's on the road too where I am.
No chance of that Chris, who is going to pay more for less of a car. There's a reason why the R is more prevalent and thats because at one point it was cheaper to get your hands on the better car for less money. I doubt there will be a "flood" of Rs, it's still a relative rarity on the road. With the R there will be the demand to meet the supply in the used market, it got high praise in the press and is up there with the hot hatch competition. That hasn't happened in the new car market for the GTI and if you were faced with buying a used R for the same price as a used GTI, i'm sure most would be buying the R.
If VW belived the "rare" GTIs would be highly sought after in the used market they'd be upping their GFVs on them which would make them more enticing as a new car on lower PCP terms as a result.
You need to be asking yourself if you prefer the R to the GTI and if you do, is the extra £80pm to run one worth it to you?
