Weirdness on the way to work
« on: 24 October 2003, 10:08 »
I was driving to work this morning and I was booting it in 3rd on a sliproad and then changed gear at about 6000 revs and then suddenly I heard this strange buzzing noise, it was loud and quite high pitched.  At first I thought it was coming from the engine, but it seemed to be coming from the dash, probably the clocks.  I slowed down a bit and tried to figure out what was going on.  It carried on for about 5 minutes and then someone phoned me and I explained to them that I thought my car was shafted, I said listen to the noise...  as soon as I said that it completely stopped!!

Any ideas as to what the noise couldve been....??  ???

Cheers

Neil

its not high pressure, its a lack of pressure at high rpm's (i think!)

could be caused by a bit of dirt getting sucked into the oil lift pump in the sump which is enough to reduce the oil flow when the car is under load

I had this same problem on my cab. It used to happen at the same point every journey, so I put it down to interference, on the radio,  from a RADAR on the airfield next to the road - however it happened on another road one day, and I pinned it down to my speedo - it used to make the high pitch whine at 62mph+. I took the speedo out, and cleaned the coupling between the enertia disc and its housing, put it back together and it has never happened since. I reckon it could have been a bit of grit or dirt causing it to vibrate at higher revolutions.
I don't own this anymore - I just can't be arsed to change the picture

The only thing that worries me is that I was red-lining it just as it happened  :(
