Irish spec'd R's do even better... Rumour has it, from week 22, Irish R's will get:

App connect, Dynaudio and (possibly) leather.
That's on top of the current spec which includes keyless, Nav, rear camera, light assist...

Is there anything the Golf R in Ireland does not get that UK does? IE: Light clusters? etc, just to redress the balance and not make us too envious!

No! The Irish spec is miles ahead of UK spec but it is a relatively recent thing. For years and years we used to get the sh1tty end of the stick when it came to spec  - until things changed about 2 years ago.

Irish R's have all this above UK cars:
19" Cadiz (The prets are only 130 euro extra)
standard Nav
Keyless
Camera
light assist

And now as I said they're adding more again from bw22.

Why are we not all buying our cars in Ireland then and going on a day trip to collect? is the price the same or do you pay more? and would there be taxes etc for doing that which would wipe out any benefit?

Not too bothered about the smaller options but standard leather and dynaudio is something to cast the green eye at as they are not cheap options by any means. And with small uplift to Pretoria you are really being spoilt!

I think taxes and the logistics of importing/exporting the car make it prohibitive tbh. Also, our clocks are all in KM/H rather than MPH so you'd need to change those over.

The R starts here at about €44k retail for the 3 door manual, which is about £33.5k.

Fully agree, I have forked out £900+ for the luxury of having Pretorias.  I would have originally liked 19" Cadiz but is not an option in the UK and these are standard in Ireland.  Just who is choosing and deciding on the options for VW UK?

Reason dropped the Sat Nav was to go to Pretoria, they are expensive but became must have, as personally think they make the car but the £900 lift is hard to justify as a charge, its over £200 a wheel extra over the standard and pretty sure that cannot be the gap - But it is what it is and I wanted them so sometimes you just pay the price and move on as to not have them would have bothered me.

The Nav isn't great anyway... you'll have App connect which is far better tbh.

I think I may have got lucky with this one.

Ours is a BW24 car with neither option spec'd so both are going to be freebies.

On top of this my dealer has already confirmed they will also honour the increased dealer contribution at £2,000, another £750 saving on the deal.

If this is all as it seems to be I am thoroughly chuffed

Vanilla 3 door in UK is £31, 685 so if added leather and dynaudio to that it comes out at £33,985 so the gap does lessen, you just get as standard we get the choice and if you add in taxes imagine Ireland cars would cost more than UK one for same spec, and with added bonus of having to work out KPH

Feel better now, its quite comparative really, as what they giveth they taketh too

Actually agree, and reason was more than happy to just use the App-Connect, but the integration is still a nice to have, and does work with the car net in showing places etc, so was happy to slide on at cost, but free will take it

Integrated Nav does come up in the Driver Display too, which personally like and use.

Maybe that finally made this decision as orders dropped for sat nav due to App-Connect and they making the long term recovery from the price lift.

Good news is always welcomed isn't it

I actually wanted the Winter Pack too but reigned in the spec, all in I have gained nearly £2k in additional cost savings on my original deal (£800 Nav / £400 Winter / £750 Dealer contribution) and I was already at £5k off list as I signed on the dotted line.

Irish R owner here. If I lived in the UK I would 100 percent be pursuing buying the car in Ireland. The dealer can spec mph clocks.

The price Joe quoted there includes an Irish tax (VRT)which is not applicable in the UK.  The tax is 28%, so knock 28% off that price. You would essentially be buying a new unregistered car that you would need to register yourself in the UK. Worth a phone call to a dealer or two anyway.
