Car won't drive straight on cambered roads
« on: 05 May 2016, 17:19 »
Hi all, lately my car is behaving strange on cambered roads. When driving on the right side of the road, I have to constantly keep the steering wheel a few degrees to the left in order to drive straight. The same happens when driving on the left side, but this time the steering has to be turned a few degrees to the right. On the center of the road or on roads without camber, the car drives straight without any problems. I've already done the wheel alignment 3 times at 2 different shops and the issue is still there. What else should I look for? I really don't have a clue what might cause such an issue.

Today I checked the wheel bearings and one was loose, however after a short test drive it looks like it wasn't the cause of the problem. I'm inclined to believe that the issue is with the rear axle because when driving on uneven roads, the rear end feels quite loose. Aside from the rear axle bushings, is there something else that might cause the rear geometry to go bad under load?

no there is not much else on the rear axle but the bushes failing. if the car drives fine on a decent level road then there can't really be much wrong with the car. how much camber is on the roads your referring to?

Don't all cars pull to the side on cambered roads? That's half the reason they exist.
Suffering from a severe and unforgiving case of GTItis

Not a lot, 2-3 degrees maybe. I guess I'll try to replace the bushings next and see if anything changes.

It's not just pulling, I actually have to turn the wheel a few degrees from it's center position in order to drive straight.

Finally had some time to fix the car. The rear bushings didn't really help, I still have to steer towards the center of the road in order to drive straight, however the slightly tail happy steering was fixed. It turned out that the rear shock absorbers were going out so whenever the car hit a bump during cornering, it would feel like the car wants to oversteer.

I guess the next thing to replace are the front bushings

Maybe :P I was just hoping there is an easy fix to the issue, but it looks like I'll just keep driving :)

Don't worry too much I did the same thing once until I learned how to align it myself, go on youtube and learn how.
I promise you it will quench your obsession.

I think you should think of moving somewhere with better roads . if the car drives fine on a decent road then the fault can't be with the car.
