Oil leak from Front N/S DCC Damper?
« on: 02 May 2016, 10:02 »
Removed wheels to detail arches etc over the w/e, whilst on the jack the rubber shock boot was detached from the bottom of the shock and I noticed a layer of oil over the inside of the boot and around the bottom of the shock....any ideas/help from anyone?

Sounds like a leak or 'misting' as they call it - have you checked the other shocks?

It'll be well worth getting it checked out.
The fact that it was detached could suggest that 'other things' had got in there and dirtied the piston and inside the gaiter but more likely it's a shock leaking from your description.

Thank you....I always ensure the boot is clipped back onto the base of the shock after the car has been lowered off the jack...To be honest I think the suspension system on my car is generally a problem, it is noisy, creaks and clunks at low speeds... :undecided:

Get on that phone first thing tomorrow!
I'd ask for a techie to come out with you so you can demonstrate the noises on roads you know will get the car misbehaving. You can guarantee if you just ask for them to road test it they'll do 20 miles on the lunchtime sandwich run and say "all normal, we didn't hear anything"
Chances are the first 'fix' they'll suggest will be lubricating bushes etc, but if you're persistent and they've done everything VW tells them to do before agreeing a warranty claim then eventually VW will give them the nod to change parts (fingers crossed!) if the fancy lubricants haven't worked.
The leaking damper should be a straight forward claim and indeed might be the culprit for the noises too if the oil volume has dropped enough for the gas pressurisation not to work correctly.

Get to the dealer soonest, and call VW Customer Services for a case number.

How old is your car?

Both my front shocks had "Red" from the first MOT, but I got nothing from VW who said that shocks are only warranted for 6 months or 6,000 miles.
I hope your dealer is friendly....

Load of bull...... from VW.

I had mine replaced when car was older than 6 months and had a lot more than 6k miles on the clock. All under warranty.
