Hill hold not disengaging - annoying/dangerous

Hi all,

Over the past few months there seems to be a problem with the hill-hold feature on our 2015 Golf Match (1.6 TDi). When stopped and I try to move off, the brakes won't release. No amount of revs or torque from the engine will move the car. I have to engage and then disengage the clutch again, or press on the brake pedal again in order to move off.

It's so annoying, and one day is going to catch someone unaware and cause them to drive into the rear of the car (as it looks like the car is starting to move off, but then stops suddenly).

It seems to be worse when it's wet outside.

It's been to VW dealer, but they said they can find nothing wrong with it  and that they've never had a similar problem.

 Anyone seen anything similar, or have any ideas what could be causing it?

That would drive me crazy.
If you put the handbrake on is it still the same?
I can't believe the dealer couldn't find anything wrong with it, if that was all just from the one day.

However, to help put your mind at ease (a bit) but as the auto hold is still engaged, you should still have your brake lights lit.

The cat still shouldn't do it though.

Have you or a garage (VW) run a test with VAG.com or similar for error codes?

I understand you need to access codes to disengage auto handbrake/hold when changing pads.

If the pads are sticking, it may be something as simple as brake dust deposit build up on discs & pads preventing the quick release of the pad.

Brake wear is not covered under warranty & your brakes may not be down to recognised wear tolerances, so VW may not change them.
I would change the pads & clean up the discs with fine emery paper to remove any deposits.

It may not be this it could be a delayed solenoid or other electrical issue, but then I would assume that would come up on a fault code reader and then be a problem for VW under warranty?

Auto hold turns the brake lights on? Is that a new thing because on my CC it doesn't and the reason I know that is because the third brake light lights up the inside of the back window like its the red light district in Amsterdam(I've seen pictures)

Hehe if the car needs new discs and odd after 1800 miles, they can take the bloody thing back and keep it.

I suspect it's something to do with the clutch pedal sensor - it behaves very differently to my last golf (GTD) in that sometimes it releases the auto hold well before the clutch buying point is reached, which means the car actually does roll back on a hill), and as we've seen sometimes it doesn't release at all.

It's going into VW for 3 days next week, so hopefully they'll be able to replicate it.

Dashcam is just a cheap (£40) G1W model - saved my bacon once already, paid for itself 100x over.

Hope they do a better job and get it sorted this time. Obviously something very wrong. As said though, with autohold activated, your brakelights will be on (for sure!). They stay on until you pull the switch for the electronic handbrake.

Mine does on my GTI. Whenever I'm stopped the brake lights are on - I can see it on the rear window although I have no Amsterdam references to quote ;-)

Yeah its actually quite an annoying feature and something I'd like to turn off via VCDS if possible.
I just think its so annoying when I'm sat behind a car and they keep their brake lights on while sitting at the traffic lights.
I always just flick the handbrake switch to get them to go off.
