GTD is supposed to mean Grand Touring Diesel.  Fine if you are only touring motorways or good A roads.

Sport suspension is fantastic on good roads. It is quite literally shocking on uneven roads. The only thing I am sure of now is that my next car will not have sports suspension.

Should have spec'ed DCC...hit the comfort button and wallow like an oil tanker in a high sea. Good for the elderly with piles.

... I did!

My car is definitely more comfortable than the Mk7 GTI we had on extended test drive. Neither are anywhere near as comfortable as my wife's new A3 on standard Dynamic suspension. Though I have to admit on a good road that GTI cornered brilliantly.

Maybe a warm hatch isn't for you... although I have to say that I've never felt the suspension to be hard, harsh or any kind of problem.

I've no idea where you live, but the roads here are far from perfect but I don't feel the need for a 4x4 with long travel suspension yet...

Tiguan 2 SEL in tungsten silver with 2wd, DSG, rearview cam, park assist, keyless and towbar. Expensive compared to the GTI three years ago but extremely well equipped.

After our holiday, I'm seriously thinking of getting a Tiguan too.

We went on a touring holiday to the west of Ireland. We took my Mk6 GTD. We should have taken my wife's A3 on 16 inch tyres and standard suspension.

A couple of times , after a few Guinness, I ended up in the passenger seat of the GTD. Bump, bump... bump, bump... bump, bump. I felt sorry for my wife who normally sits in the passenger seat. I knew that the suspension was firm, but did not appreciate just how uncomfortable it could be. It was difficult to even do the speed limit in places.

So the Tiguan is a good option. Though I would like a little more performance. So maybe the facelift A3 as I can specify standard suspension with a 190ps petrol or 184ps diesel engine.

I bought the GTD before I married. Then moved to live in a rural location. The roads where we live are very uneven. I really should have changed the car years ago.

The thing is; I like the performance of the car. Unfortunately, performance usually comes with firm suspension.

As I usually keep my cars for around 6 years, it is important to me to try and get a car which ticks as many boxes as possible.

I still think the GTI is a fantastic car, i may yet keep it a few more years.

If not maybe a Golf R, Golf GTD (for different reasons obviously), BMW 440i (HUGE discounts), S3 (not sure which body style) or maybe even a TTS (if/when NAV becomes standard)....

Holding out until some more info is available on the Golf Face Lift / Mk8 until i decide.

Just looked at the numbers for an A4 S Line 3.0 TDI (272) quattro, which was not as expensive as i thought it'd be...

Audi A4...I have just got one as a courtesy car, the wife's A1 has a split rubber upper door seal, as it tapers off towards the wing mirror. My mate has an A4 Saloon and raves about it, so I was surprised when I had to drive this one home from the Audi garage - it is a 2.0TDI Saloon, S-Line Black edition Quattro. Badging it isn't obvious what the variant engine is - i'm guessing the 190TDI Ultra by the performance. The driver's position is a bit claustrophobic - you feel very hemmed in as the dash and centre console wrap around you (must be worse for my mate as he is a right short-arse).

There is one thing about it that I don't think I could get used to, the pedal position is awful. All 3 pedals are very close together and to the right - my legs were diagonally to the right working the pedals when I thought about it. When I didn't think about the position of my feet, my left foot was hanging off the left side of the clutch pedal, so when I pressed the clutch pedal in, my foot was hitting the footrest (which is about 3 times the width of the Golf's to take up the redundant space in the footwell caused by the offset).

Awful pedal position!
