@ CraigW: There aren't going to be any leasers with that sort of spec!

Indeed the R won't be a car remembered for its fantastic resale value but it's popular and got a similar image to the mk5 GTI in its day and that never had any resale value issues.
VW didn't supply all the leases in one hit, they had long wait times and were dribbled out into the market initially. The only reason they seem so common is because people buy them instead of GTIs now. You used to see loads of mk2 GTIs everywhere too back in their day and they always had excellent resale value, same for VR6's, MK5 GTI's etc.
The only reason the mk6 R held its value well is because nobody much bought them.

The R will stay a popular model and will be a popular second hand car once new stocks slow then dry up - it's been a huge hit with road testers and is a very well respected performance car.
I still reckon long term it'll have better than average depreciation but the days of VW's having rock solid residuals are probably over with all the heavy discounting going on as VW go for volume sales. Just look at BMW now.

Of course there aren't going to be any leases with that spec unless your insane but most options as we know are not going to add any value when it comes to resale. I suspect if your trading your R into a dealer then your going to get hammered unless you intend on holding onto the car for at least 3 years by which time the mk8 will probably be out so I'm guessing that won't help either.

Yep, totally agreed and hence why my car has zero options (not that I had any choice in the matter at the time!) due to my inability to stop having a wandering eye as far as cars are concerned I pay a huge amount of attention to likely resale as I change far too often.
On the other hand the financial value is less important than the enjoyment value to some people. ClubSport owners for example
Seriously though, there are plenty of people on the forums who can happily afford just about any car they choose no matter what the price, but they choose to own a Golf. Depreciation is less of a concern to some buyers. Not everyone is a peasant like me!
And if you spend a lot of time in the car or intend on keeping it a long time then you want it just so. You have to be happy with it.
And if your employer is paying for a lot of the toys and depreciation then even better.

I am in full agreement I will lose money on the options when It comes to trade in.  Infact It was in the back of my mind all the time as I configured the car.  The thing I kept thinking was the money I knocked off was paying for some of the options so I was getting some of them for free and wanted to see what some of them are like so I did not keep wandering what they were like for future cars i.e. DCC.  You only live once, I had the money already put aside for a car and it so happened I managed to get the spec of I configured yesterday and hit the same amount I have put aside.   I will be holding on to the car for at least up to 3 to 4 years as I hope to save money for the next Golf R, or failing that if it has a sudden price hike I will look at the next GTI.

I want to remember my Golf R being something special when i am in my old age living in a box on the street because I have a rubbish pension due to spending all my money on cars with lots of options rather than saving it for old age....  Guess with this in mind I had better not retire.

I am completely happy with my GTI, was not expecting to get a Golf R yesterday, but had one of those moments where you go sod it, just go for it.  I guess it is an early mid-life crisis.

As a side note, my GTI had options as well The £16K I was offered I took as on the list price for the car and any options I configured which was about £4K+ I was making a loss on.  I do not drink, smoke etc, so all the money I could waste on these vices I have splurged on options. For me it may be a case of waste it on options instead of smoke it or waste it down a toilet.

However I am still in shock a little at what has happened

Fair play to you dude, that's exactly how I look at things in life, if you can afford it and you want it just buy it. Life's way too short to be saving every little penny for later on in years. People think I'm mad for spending all my money on cars but as long as bills are paid and food on the table, then spend away . I don't have many regrets in life but I do kinda regret not ticking a few more options when I was ordering my car, none of which I really need, but now I'm thinking I would kinda like them lol
Your car sounds like it will be awesome so just enjoy the experience, PS I'm jealous

I am kinda still in a sense of shock and excitement right now.  Completely unexpected to be in this situation today knowing I have a car to look forward to in 6 months but also the sudden realisation I have just splurged all the money...  But to be honest it was for a car anyway.

Well I can see why.  I'm smitten by the whole thing, makes the R look very boring.
