I took my car to the VW/Audi dealer this morning and had a sit in a blue RS6 Avant,£85k's worth- wow!
Also a white 5 door RS3 specced at £51k! Lovely car but 51k,a lot of cash for a hatch.
I looked at the Audi RS3 but my spec was coming out at a cool £53k.
The Golf R is enough for me :)

Trouble with a leased Polo GTI it is a poverty essentially spec Polo with checked seats and a 1.8 engine, you do have to hit the options list hard on them

I toyed with one to replace the Blue GT and in reality just didn't see the point
You just have to treat it as an old school GTI. Big engine, light bodyshell, less toys, more driver involvement. Basically what the ClubSport should have been too.
Golf GTI's, R's etc are all heavily specced from the factory as standard but you don't need a lot of that kit. VW are just obliged to put it in to keep the spec competitive with rival marques.
People have become too soft, piddling about with menus and sub menus, there shouldn't be any need for most of it. They're drivers cars.
Climb in a mk5 GTI now and you realise that it had just enough kit as standard and was high on driver involvement without too much electronic frippery.

I ran one up on the configurator this week, stuck to Nardo, standard wheels (as I'd go aftermarket anyway) and just a few cheap options as it's fairly well equipped out of the box and it was £41k I think.
Once my R has lost a bit more value which won't be too long into the future it could potentially go in part ex (as I think Audi allow big PCP deposits) I'd just have to look after the monthlies.
At that point I came to my senses thinking about the £££ depreciation involved and instead started daydreaming about VW up! TSI's !!!

There's not a lot essential on a car but plenty you'd expect these days. As a self confessed options tightarse there are a few things I would really miss on a car:-

Electric windows (everything but a bottom-end Dacia has these now)
DAB Radio and USB/SD card connectivity for the tunes
Aircon
Auto wipers and lights
Xenons/LEDs (although I didn't treat the wife's A1 to S-line spec or optioned lights)
Autodimming rear-view mirror
Multifunction steering wheel

That sounds a lot when listed!
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....
MK7 R 5 door, manual, Lapiz Blue, Prets.

100% with you there MH and I'll add electrically adjusted mirrors and power steering as I remember driving mk1 and mk2 GTI's without either and it was a real chore!

I think every car comes with PAS now but you'd not think it by the amount of people that cut corners at junctions then look at you as if you have no right to be breathing the same air.

Oh and ABS brakes. But they're a legal requirement now anyway.
My other car has no ABS and I'm always wary in the wet.

When I get to the end of my PCP I will be looking at the Megane RS 275 Trophy,  I have been toying with going back to a Cayman S now the flat 6 looks like its being fazed out in the smaller cars, and if i kept it long enough its value will bottom out, but i can't get away from the convenience of a hot Hatch with lots of driver involvement. The GTi PP ticks the box i guess, as its a bit less tied down and lighter compared to the R with the 4WD, but The Megane is considered the benchmark for tests, so I think it would be rude not to test drive one.

But the Megane doesn't hold value well enough, and I doubt my man maths can make it work...

Was not planning this  as have expensive year ahead with saving money for my Master of Arts Fees for end of the year and new PC workstation for 3D animation, but on seeing Exonians offer for Golf R at VW Exeter I had to give it a try myself.

I am now going in to VW Exeter today to see what they can offer me on an Oryx White Golf R with extras.  If the offer is not right then I may just wait until MK8 released.  But if it's too good to miss then I may go ahead and shake the guys hand to close the deal.  It all depends on the discount he offers (if same as offered to Exonian) and amount Part Ex on my immaculate very low mileage Oryx White GTI PP with all extras (except DCC).

Will keep you posted.

In case you haven't already done so, get a quote off drive the deal as most dealers will match their prices.

Oh dear God, what have I done!  Was not planning on buying a car today, but I got £3K off list price on an Oryx White 5 Dr Golf R with practically all options and projected trade in price for my Gti Pp of £16K.  I spent hours getting every last penny out of the dealer before signing the dotted line.  i know I could get more out of drive the deal, but this much out of a local dealer is not bad.

I now have a Golf R,  5 Dr, in Oryx White with the following on order:

DCC
Tech Pack
Winter Pack
Rear View Camera
Carbon Mirror Caps
19" Pretoria Wheels
Climate Windscreen
Advanced Telephone Connection
App Connect
Service Plan
4yr Warranty Extension

Oh and another free boot liner tray

Estimated build time is 6mths, September maybe?

Congratulations, shame you didn't push them to match the Drive The Deal price. As long as your happy it's all good.
Interesting you've been quoted 6 months, I only only placed my order on 25/03/16 and was told 16 weeks.
