Not a golf but managed to get a Passat alltrack 190 dsg on lease for 2 years, 8k miles, £446 deposit and £145 a month! Thought deal was to good to turn down!

That sounds like a great bargain.  It must work out cheaper than a fully loaded sky subscription!

I wouldn't mind driving a passat, I can think of far worse cars

I have always purchased my cars outright (combination of payment & loan) but I must admit for the first time I'm slowly coming round to the possibility of leasing. There are some fantastic deals out there if you do your homework and the idea of being able to jump into a different brand new car every two years is very appealing to me.

Hi all
Seen on a few posts about red badging on the gti seems in the early days of the mk7 some came with red gti others silver pp or non pp however now vw only doing red gti badging on the PP for the uk unless you want it on non pp either buy and fit yourself r ask your dealer to have fitted prior to collecting the car...

I had an 11.3% discount through car wow - DTD would have been slightly better but it was my local dealer and I fancied the local pickup.

The 11.3% savings were pretty much squarely spent on options, and I'm paying £360 a month over 4yrs/10k a yr after a £2800 deposit.

I'm facing a bit of a conundrum at the moment in regards to whether to make an overpayment.

If I were to make an overpayment now of say £5000 I would save over £1500 of interest from the remaining 2 years of finance. Even considering interest on the 5k in the bank it's a no brainer for the savings.

The "problem" is, this would bring my settlement balloon payment forward to December of this year (18 months early), meaning I would have to sell the car and go for something new in December of this year, and I can't quite figure out what my car will be worth compared to the balloon payment of £12,480. Although, hopefully diesel gate would be a distant memory by then. I nearly switched for a GTI at the start of this year but I couldn't stomach paying off the negative equity I currently have.

If anyone can help me figure this out I would be very grateful!

Other than that, I might be tempted to lease next time - even if it works out the same money at least you don't have to faff around with all of the above!

^ I personally wouldn't overpay to shorten the loan unless you're going to buy it outright. With Dieselgate the way it is right now i'd be looking towards the cushion of that GFV. If it lingers there may be people with negative equity at 3 years. Get the monthlies done in early and you might find yourself being offered in px after 2 years not much more than 3 year GFV. If dieselgate hadn't happened then i'd say go for the overpayment, but as is you may well find your £1500 saving eaten up with a sh!tty px value.

The potential faff with leasing is getting a great deal on your next car for a car you want (or could live with) at the right time so there's no lease overlap and no gap between cars.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

I think a good few of us on here and on other forums too no doubt are pretty much in the same mindset.
To me, if the R loses so much value that there's no point part ex'ing it at a couple/few years old then I'd just keep it and initially run a cheap up! or C1 or something for commuting/supermarket/dump trips as a £60 per month leaser until the R is old enough to be sold privately, with low mileage, then get something a bit dearer on a lease depending on what was on offer at the time.
Obviously leases are only good value if the car you're leasing has the spec you want straight out of the factory and you don't have to wait ages between one lease being collected and another arriving on the back of a trailer. However private leasing is gradually becoming popular but business leases have been popular for years and years and they seem to manage ok seamlessly between contracts so you just have to be organised and sharp eyed. I'm sure there are flexibilities built in.

All the early GTI's had silver badges. After about 12 months they changed it to red for the PP. The red badges are easy enough to get hold of if you want one on a non PP GTI.

Thanks Matt, I was hoping to hear your thoughts with your good grasp on these things. You've helped confirm my suspicions that bringing the final payment forward may not be the best move, and yes it would have made sense in different circumstances. I've got the 4yr warranty, so can keep my options open at least, it depends if I get tempted along the way of course!

My thoughts just now are that if there is a really good lease deal to be had on the R then it makes sense given the potential poor trade in values plus the basic R is so well specced that I wouldn't really bother about adding options which would be a complete waste of money on a lease anyway. Just now on my car I have DCC, which I've never noticed much of a difference, sat nav pro which is nice but I hardly ever use if I'm honest. The two I would miss most would be the heated seats and especially keyless entry but again they are nice but not essential.

This is all hearsay just now anyway until I hear what the lease price is. If it's not as good as I was hoping then I'll probably be sticking with the GTI for a while longer

You can get Car Net on the new R's Craig so that renders the nav upgrade as 'not worth the money' and Keyless and heated seats are far from necessary unless you have a regular female driver.
Just about the only people I know who love heated seats (in my non cyber-life) are women who seem to go mad for them. I had them on one of my mk6's with leather (dealer registered car so not ordered new) and used them once. Hardly a necessity and that's coming from someone who gets in their car around 4am most mornings having had to remove a layer of ice.
As for keyless, no comment! But I'm sure it wouldn't add masses to a lease price.
