They suspected the unit was faulty on pick up but I reported the total failure on the 14th March and James at JCB emailed me on the 15th to say the unit was in! I was shocked as I expected a long wait! Hope you get your sorted as quickly as I did as this unit controls so much.

Yes Pompey I have exactly the same diagnosis from the dealer as you - could even look at a software update as the unit is just in a perpetual state of flux.  New glovebox unit on order and provisionally booked in for Thursday afternoon fitting.  Oh it will be so good to get me tunes etc. back in time for Easter!  Another £2,500 cost to VW as well!!

That's good that you are getting it fixed quickly. Positive I took from the experience is that I know my car has no squeaks or rattles!

Update from my crashing unit;

Recap- MIB2 unit 'beeping' and screen unresponsive ONLY in MEDIA using the SD card. Occasionally the screen works, but the screen icons that return back to the SD card's top level (icons in the top left of the screen) do not work.

Northampton VW took the unit back and gave it a thorough testing. I spoke to the mechanic who performed the tests and there's no denying he has done everything to try to replicate the issue. He put the issue down to a faulty SD card, seeing as the issue only occurs in the MEDIA section using the SD card.

To counter this, I spent a few hours deleting files I thought were corrupt whilst reformating the card. I've also used another SD card that I know is 100% working and reliable. So far the unit has crashed twice in around 12 journeys in the car using the old card.
Tonight I shall perform a hard 20 second reset of the unit with the '100% working and reliable card'.

Does anyone else have issues with SD cards?

Getting slightly annoying now. It's been back twice with this issue. I'm a music nut (hence speccing Dynaudio) and not having my music accessible through the SD card is seriously annoying.

Some videos of the issue can be found here; https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=D2B494622FBCA77F!3190&authkey=!AIV13lkvSOH2LFc&ithint=folder%2cmp4

Slightly frustrated- Unsure whether to just accept the issue and not use the SD card function rather than have it looked at.

Pompey - having the Sport & Sound pack is the only thing that's kept me going in these miles without a media unit.

Just watched your videos, I can feel your frustration. That would drive me mad.
I've had something similar but it was when it was -4 outside and just put it down to these units not liking the cold.
If the car is under warranty I certainly wouldn't be just accepting not to use the SD card.

When its playing up like that and you remove the card does the problem go away?
I wouldn't be using that card at all even after formatting it.
I've had a few SD cards that has brought my PC to its knees so yeah I would say its possible.

Have you tried running the unit on just the radio, ipod, or even a portable hard drive for a prolonged period to see if the problems come back. Then do the same with the dodgy SD card in the slot. That should narrow it down for you.

Where did you buy the SD card from? I know some people that have bought 128gb cards for less than £30 and they then wonder why they have problems.

Yes it is possible that a card can corrupt what it is put into and depending what is on the card just removing it might not sort the problem out.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Some responses;

1. When it plays up, and I take the card out, the problem does not go away (frustratingly). I have to hold the power down for a hard reset.
2. The radio/android auto/bluetooth etc are not affected at all. It only occurs in the MEDIA SD CARD area. Some of my colleagues have just said "don't use SD cards".... thanks guys, not much help!
3. The SD card was from Amazon (official Amazon shop, not a supplier). I bought two of the cards at the same time and I currently have one in my phone. The phone one has worked perfectly, which actually annoys me abit. You hear of dodgy cards all the time, so it really could be an issue with the card, but it's so temperamental and difficult to repeat.
4. I have a 7 year old SDHD card which is reliable as old boots. Had that in for the past few days and trying to replicate the issue (so far it's behaving itself). As soon as the unit has issues with this card, I'll be on the phone to VW.

Right now I'm giving VW the benefit of the doubt with the 'it's your SD card' comments until the reliable card sees issues.

I'd definitely lean towards it being the card since that seems to be the common denominator.
Does it happen when the card is in but you are on a different source?

When you say you bought the 2 cards at the same time and 1 is in your phone, it is an SD card you are using and not a microSD with an adapter?

I was reading the other week that Amazon were caught out with certain suppliers and certain memory cards it was selling was fake. Not their marketplace sellers but Amazon themselves. Not saying that is what is up with yours as cards can just become corrupted but just to be aware that because its Amazon itself its not a definite original.
