I won't mention the dealer as I will give them a chance to do the right thing first. Is really strange though, because every other aspect of the visit was absolutely top class, couldn't fault them at all.  I had assumed it was a post-"emissions scandal" customer satisfaction drive.

With regards to the service book, I am really at a loss.  This is the 2nd service, there was no mention on the first service that it was missing and I honestly can't remember seeing or not seeing it prior to that.  I do usually leave it on the passenger seat for them, but wasn't feeling well when I dropped the car off yesterday and just wanted to get back home.

....one was back when I had my Mk4 R32 and I left it at the dealers for warranty repairs. Later the next day I was driving rather briskly when I had another car come up behind me and determined not to let him pass(I was a lot younger) put my foot down only to get smoked a few miles down the road by my own car.

Wow what are the chances of that? I've read about folk seeing their own car but never being raced by their own car
You were obviously a bit of a petrol head did you not even notice you had another R32 on your tail, never mind your own car? I can spot them a mile away.
What did they give you as way of an apology?
My work colleague dropped his car off at the dealers years ago and as he was passing mid morning he says he saw his car wheel spinning away from the lights!! According to him he says he demanded 4 new tyres and got them.

Five simple rules on leaving a car at the dealers:

1.Always do a walk around inspection with the reception person and have them record condition in writing.
2. Take a photo of the fuel gauge and mileage on the MFD with your phone and make it obvious to them.
3. Tell them not to wash the car and place signs in the windows on both sides to that effect (unless you are happy for them to swirl up the paintwork of course)
4. Wait with the car if you can.
5. Instruct them they DO NOT have your permission to drive the car off their premises. If they say they need to 'test drive' it say thats OK but you will need to be with them on the drive.

VW replaced my button under warranty in first year of ownership, they didn't raise an eyebrow. If a button can't survive a few hundred presses (let alone a few thousand), it's really not fit for purpose!

I too was stabbed by the sharp plastic flakes (cue violin). It redefines the exhilaration of starting your car anyway

Well,,,,, Their warranty advisor states that it is not covered under warranty as it is seen as "wear and tear", they reckon they would not be able to claim warranty for it if they replaced it.

I do give up with VW dealers...

I wonder what the chances are that I will be charged for it when I hand the car back at the end of the PCP period, by an over-zealous car checker.  All of a sudden it will become damage and not wear and tear ...

There's "fair wear and tear" and then there's something that;s supposed to last as long as the car and hasn't. There's no way that's fair. The warranty manager is obviously massively risk adverse regarding getting reimbursement - time to go elsewhere.

I had whiteworm on my MK5 Golf GT's wheels and Benfield wouldn't do anything for fear of not getting reimbursed, so I went to Pulman - never been there before and the warranty manager sorted everything straight away and I waited a week for the new wheels to come in. I've bought 4 cars from Pulman and none from Benfield after that event - a costly mistake for them.

The old one used DNA recognition to start the engine (analysing the blood you shed onto the button from the sharp edge of the picked out "N").
