It's difficult, but even though Sat Nav is rarely used, I feel it is seen as a requirement on a car of this type and will be required when it comes to resale.
Personally, I would not buy a GTi / R without it, even though I know a decent smartphone is likely to be a better option in use.

Buying an option to sell a car down the line is just lunacy. If you wont use it then don't spec it. Pay ££££ out to make your car's p/x enhanced by ££ makes no sense at all. If it made a used car THAT much more desirable, you'd be getting your option money back and then some at p/x or sale time.

I agree up to a point on the lunacy of paying up for options you don't need.

However, VW bring a car out and people queue up to buy, then they add a few options as standard.

Disco Nav is standard now on Gti and not on the R, chances are it soon becomes standard on the R, so those without are lacking.
I know when I bought my GTi which is of an age where Nav was an option, I wouldn't consider one without.

Of course, if you are buying a car for yourself and don't care about future value and residuals etc, then fair enough.
We all have different ideas on how to buy a car.

What's not to care about? If you buy a car and add options, at best you'll get 20% of your money back when you sell. An R without options will retain more of it's % purchase price than one with options.

If you're buying an option mainly with a view to enhance your residuals, chucking away 80% of your spend to get 20% back at trade-in makes absolutely no sense no matter how you look at it. The R is very well equipped as standard, it will not look bereft of features if it doesn't have Nav or whatever else you'd spec.

Add Nav (£765) to an R and and your R will be worth £150 more than the one without. Lacking Nav, Leather or whatever else you want to throw at it doesn't make it unsellable, you'll get a very modest return for your outlay. Buying an option for the next owner is just chucking it away, don't buy anything you don't want for yourself.

I think it makes more of a difference if you are going to be selling privately as the options will make the car stand out from the others that don't have it.

With car play now I would never opt for satnav because no matter how good the factory nav is it is not going to be better than google maps or even apple maps.

I didn't bother with VW Navigation, Leather, Lane Assist with Dynamic lighting and the Carbon Mirror options.
I don't think the VW Nav is a must now that we can use CarPlay :)

Until car manufacturers wake up, I would take the Keyless option off, makes it much easier to steal the car now.
The only advantage is they don't have to break into your house to get the keys.

Major security risk to keyless cars
