People who want the R will by the R, people like me who dont like the R's styline, dont want 4WD will by the Clubsport....simples
Correct, Volkswagen will sell them all as the GTI brand has a cult following regardless of price.
The GTI PP is a good package too, having owned one, for me the GTI CS isn't special/unique enough after all it's just a tarted up GTI PP.
For some, the GTI PP with discounts, becomes a very appealing buy instead of the GTI CS.

Spot on!

I think it's more the price differential being so small and the fact that it is basically a detuned golf R as well as a tarted up GTI PP as stated above. It just doesn't seem good value for money in my eyes considering the discounts you can get on the R and GTI PP but I do like its looks

What is the fascination with 4WD? Does anybody on this forum drive their cars (in the wet) so hard the rely on 4WD?  I am in the NE Scotland and we can get plenty of snow but wouldn't consider a 4WD car (thats what my wife's S3 is for ;-) )

A well balanced 2WD car is far more rewarding and less likely to get you into trouble ie think the car is uncrashable!
You don't have to drive a FWD hard to reach its limits in the wet, my GTI PP struggles.
The GTI CS has 265-290ps, anything other than dry weather, it's going to prove troublesome even with the VAQ e-diff to get the power down!

The £250 dearer Golf R will sail by and keep on going whereas the GTI just struggles.
The Golf R is already as well balanced car hence why it's done so well in the motoring press/community, people wanting a possible further 5-10% in driver involvement (dry) can but the GTI CS.

People buying the GTI CS are looking for more than outright performance in my opinion, it will appeal to many and it will sell well.
It's not going to outperform the Golf R though as its just a GTI underneath.

I do like the GTI CS looks, it's going to go down well with the motoring press too.

Bottom line, anybody owning a GTI, GTI CS or R should feel happy and proud, these are some of the best modern hatchbacks to date.

Hi Chaps, been a while since I posted on here but have been reviewing the CS comments with interest.  Enquired at 2 local dealers over the weekend so will see what they come back with.  I understand they are able to do finance quotes from tomorrow.

I am pushing my local VW/Audi group for a price given we have had 3 Audis from them over the last 3 years but I suspect there will be limited discounts..  Quite fancy the CS as a long term keeper / weekend fun car but as many have said, over £30k is really quite steep given there isn't any other bespoke hardware such as Brembo 4 pot brakes, standard recaro seats etc..

That said I like the look of it and agree with comments about the 2wd v 4wd, not everyone wants an R..  I already see way more Rs's than GTI's so a CS will be a rare sight.

Have my name down for a BMW M2 in 2017 as most dealers have only 2 cars per year and the worrying thing for the CS is that the M2 will come in at £10k more which isn't a huge difference given the performance gap etc..

sounds about right for loyal customers.. my Audi dealership offered me about 4% off an RS3 when I was considering one and that was as a customer loyalty discount only..

A well balanced 2WD car is far more rewarding and less likely to get you into trouble ie think the car is uncrashable!

You don't have to drive like a loon to appreciate the advantages of the R. The GTI 220 struggles with grip and traction at times (especially with Bridgestones).

Driving conditions will have to be nigh-on perfect to take advantage of that 45ps it has over the standard GTI and a bit more on limited boost time, the R's power is more accessible.

The GTI CS is undoubtedly going to be a great car but the R is markedly better for pennies more in RRP and considerably less factoring discount access between the 2 cars. Most people would consider it crazy to be paying more for the (slightly) lesser car.

This has never been an issue in the past, the R/R32/V6 4MOTION/VR6/G60 were always niche cars that weren't competing with the GTI or its anniversary editions on performance or price, now they are.

Will people pay more for a CS down the line over an R? Doubtful unless you went the whole hog with the seats. For most PCPing, that CS will be £100 a month more at minimum due to meagre discounts, a bitter pill to swallow.

Leasegate is long over and still R sales are very strong compared to GTI. The only way the CS makes sense is if the GFV is ridiculously high, like £19k after 3 years.

The R is the new GTI - that's VW's doing with wafer thin price differentials.

All depends on supply and demand though - if there are 1000 CS's and 5000 people want them they will retain their value and ultimately cost a lot less than an R.

If you look on the AUC website there are plenty of very recent R's with very low mileages going for well under £25k already.

At the end of the day you cant bend the rules of supply and demand and that will dictate total cost of ownership, not the RRP or monthlies via PCP.
