Which 6x9 speakers ?
« on: 26 September 2005, 14:54 »
I want some half decent speakers instead of the standard ones fitted in my mk3 gti. Anyone recommend any 6x9's that don't cost the earth? Model number as well as manufacturer would be appreciated, cheers.

best 6x9s are no 6x9s!

spend the money on a decent set of front component front speakers instead. That way the best part of the sound will be where you are!, not above the parcel shelf!

thats the best mk3 ive seen..ever! its just clean and subtle..

have a browse on either www.caraudiosecurity.com, www.caraudiocentre.com or www.caraudiodirect.co.uk the latter will give a discount if you mention your a member of this forum, but both do good deals and have buyers reviews.

I was thinking about getting some a while back for mine but opted for a pair of infinity kappa components instead.  I was going to go for a pair of infinity or Alpines 6x9's and spoke to a few people about it. I was told that the infinity's would have a lack of bass and to go for some Pioneer TS-A6911 or TS-A6921. They have the best freq range (25-30kHz), are 80 watts rms and best of all are 40 - 50 pounds. It depends on if you car is subbed or not. If it is then you don't want these as the sub will provide the low end frequencies and you can go for some infinity's or something like that.

if you already have a sub then just spend the money on a better amp to power that and a pair of components.

hu with a decent processor+decent amp+1 pair of components+sub=the best way to get good sound

only my opinion like but it works for me!

I used to ues the Pioneer A6911's and was very happy, but then my whole system was Pioneer. I like to keep the various components matched and I have all JBL in my Mk2 now. Mainly because you can get the 6x4 JBL's for the rear to replace the originals, and also JBL's for the dash speaker replacements. So I have all those plus a 10" JBL sub in a box and a pair of JBL 6x9's in the MDF shelf, plus a pair of Pioneer (sic) 13cm speakers in the door pods. Main reason for doing it like this is cos it mostly stays hidden and looks standard. Can't see the replacements for the standard speakers or the door speakers. Only possible to see the 6x9' in the shelf. Awesome sound though. If you want to run a sub then you're right about the 6x9's, but my Pioneer DEH-P7700MP head unit has built in High-Pass filters and various other variables to put most bass to the sub and let the 6x9's handle the mid-range with the door speakers. Replacements then handle the "fill-in" sound for a rounder sound. Guess it mostly depends how far you want to go and what head unit you want to run.

It depends how deep your pockets are?
I'm kind of gonna argue with golfpro here, what he says is true in the respect that you will get a much better sound quality and soundstage with components...........but it's going to cost you, big time.
don't even bother with cheap components either !
But My advice is go for the 6x9's,
The reasons:
i have a very expensive audiophile home stereo system which sounds awesome, but people listen to it and say hmmm......that sounds "nice"
in my car i have a pair of Vibe 6x9's running off a mutant amp and when people hear that they say
hmmm......that sounds "nice"
My point being that my home stereo sounds 50 times better than my car, yet most people can't tell the difference?
I can, and i know the systems weaknesses but at the end of the day when your hacking down the road with your tunes thumping all you really need a car stereo to do is go loud with a fair degree of quality, which the 6x9's will do far better than components in a pound for pound comparison
So ask yourself if you can tell the difference between good and superb and weather you have a big bundle of cash to spare?

thanks diablo, "nice" is all I'm aiming for so I think I will get 6x9's for two reasons, 1) cost (I'd rather spend lots of cash on performance orientated upgrades than musical excellence) and 2) I rarely even bother to take the head unit front with me unless I'm going on a long trip (growing up on a steady diet of fast motorcycles means I like listening to engines as much as music!). Can you recommend any particular 6x9's?

golfpro fights back....

right diablo, who spends the most time in your car. More to the point, who owns it. Assuming the answer to both is you, why do you give a sh!t what other people say. Surely it is in there for your enjoyment!?!

If you can tell that the sound is 50times better in your house doesnt it piss you off when u get in your car and think this sounds 50times worse than whats in my house?

if you want loud music, and you want to stage the sound where no one hears it, go for 6x9's, if u want good sound then dont.
