There's some serious back peddling going on here today
If all Lapiz R's looked like #wigit's does in his post from Tuesday, my opinion could be changed.
The light has caught it really well and made it look a lot lighter than Lapiz normally looks.
It would look even better in Carbon Grey.

Oh yeah just remembered, it's not available

I must admit i'm getting bored with the looks of the car whether its the GTI or R. There's not doubt its a very capable car but it's just a bit dull in its appearance. Up my neck of the woods I see loads of R's and GTD's. Not so many GTI's but then they look identical to the GTD anyway. It's just become a run of the mill car to me.

I like the fact it's a bit understated, it's always been part of it's appeal.
Get yourself a fast Ford or similar if you want something a bit more in your face.

Ah yes Carbon Grey – the missed R opportunity. Why VW? Why?

Haha, lots of back pedalling.

I agree with your comments though.  When you see Lapiz with that really bright blue ‘pop’ it looks great, like wigit’s in his ‘dirty’ pic and like JBGTI’s in all the pics he’s posted.  However when it takes on that much darker blue look, I’m much less keen. It was that that put me off it when deciding what colour to go for.  There's a couple in Canterbury and they always look really dark, but probably down to needing some detailing TLC.  I very much liked the Mk6 R Rising Blue.

Time for a change then Craig?  Got anything in mind?

Like Kalimon I'm fine with understated cars, but I have a real soft spot for Focus ST's but I wouldn't get one. At a certain age it just looks stupid.  I'll stick with dull but capable.

The big difference between me and Kalimon is that i've had the car for 2.5 years so the excitement has long worn off where as he hasn't taken delivery of his yet.

I'm not saying i'm looking for a shouty car but just a change of scenery. I do really fancy an M235i but will hold off a while to see anything else appears on the market in the next 6 months or so.

Those ambitions may be curtailed anyway given i work in the public sector and budgets are being slashed left, right and centre

Yes you are at opposite ends of the spectrum, so understandable.  Although I don't really get bored so much, at the point your at I usually start looking around for the next car, unless I absolutely love the one I'm in.  My last Mk5 GTI being an example, kept that for 4 years as wasn't ready to give it up earlier.

Understand your caution about future car purchases.  I too work into the public sector and the same budgetary cuts taking place year on year on year.  Staff levels have dropped by over 50% in last 3 years. And no end in sight!

The same has happened here in Shropshire. The council have cut their staff in half, so most of the most useful planning officers and building inspectors, that had got their years in, have taken their pensions and set up in private practice as planning consultants and independent building inspectors. The council can't keep up with the workload, so are having to outsource.

If local authorities were run as 'proper' businesses, they would last no time at all.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I bought my R outright from VW. It was pre reg with about 5 miles on the clock.

The reason for the glut of R's for sale at main dealers is this; the R got phenominal reviews in the motoring press and lots of orders were placed. The dealers snapped up lots of build slots (the dealership I bought mine from originally pre reg 36 of them) and hoped to sell them quickly.

Then the scandal came out and VW sales have dipped big time. Dealers now have a lot of cars to shift as they have got caught out by the press stories murmuring about slow sales and potential petrol co2 issues.

For anyone wanting to buy an R then go and haggle really hard and you would grab a deal. I got a great deal.

As for GTi's - I also have an edition 30 which I love to bits, but the thing I love about the R is that no matter what the weather if you bury the throttle it just squats and goes. My Ed 30 spins the wheels in 1st 2nd and sometimes 3rd in the wet - useless really.

Re the exhausts on the R - yeah I agree they are far too much and at odds with the subtle styling.
