There is really only one explanation for the amount of R's on the road compared to GTI's, cheap PCP and lease deals.
The difference in payments between the two is relatively small ( compared to an outright purchase ) so buyers opt to pay a few quid more a month for a quicker car.
The first thing my dealer said to me was 'why not get an R', until I told him I was buying it outright.
As for GTD's, that must be down to people getting them as company cars over GTI's or R's.

Agree with the above.

There is a lot of hype on here about the Golf R. I don't want want one. If I did I'd already have one.

Yes, it is obviously faster.

But....

It looks really plain until you see the rear end then it looks a bit silly.
Boot space is restricted, major problem for me.
MPG.
R line Golfs.
Insurance.
Common as muck.
The 'what's that?' questions.(errmm, a bit like a GTI but FASTER...)
No heritage. (I didn't have a Golf R fifteen years ago)
No Jacara cloth.
Golfball.
No fogs.

Purchase price.(Unless you're leasing of course. Does anyone actually own an R??)

GTD
If I was a company car driver then I'd probably have one.
Not a fan of dirty diesels. Never have been.

Still loving my GTI 30K in.

Mk7 GTI. DBP, DCC, Winter pack. Mine since new, July 2013.
GTI no. 4. Golf no. 5.  VW no. 7.

Lots of anti R feeling on here lately.  Are you lot reclaiming your forum.

Yes that's right, fogs maketh the car.

Heritage takes time to build.  The GTI didn't have heritage nearly 40 years ago.

I own an R.

I'm certainly not anti 'R' and I personally like the subtle styling although maybe too subtle from the front.
The way car buying has changed over the last few years means we are seeing people driving cars like the R who wouldn't normally be able to afford one and this has made them relatively common.
My one pet hate with the R is Lapiz Blue but that's just personal preference.
Looks the dogs in black though

My R is not leased, but I totally get your point, years ago a vast majority of the owners now would simply not be able to afford one ie making them more exclusive
Current: MK7 Golf R (Limestone Grey) DSG, 19 Prets, Winter Pack, Rear Camera, High Beam Assist, Apple Connect, Gloss Black Mirrors
Gone: MK7 Golf R (Tornado Red) DSG, Winter Pack, Keyless, Gloss Black Mirrors
Gone: MK7 Golf GTD (Pure White)

The whole cheap lease deal era put more R's on the road for sure, and reduced the exclusivity somewhat, and at first that bothered me but I got over it, once I got in the car!  And, relatively speaking I don't think they are really as common as some would like to think, lol.

There's 4 R's round my way and roughly the same amount of GTI's but a fair few more GTD's.  If 4 R's (in a locality of 150,000 residents) is deemed to be 'common' then I can live with that, haha.  Good job I don't have a Nissan Joke otherwise I'd be crying my heart out.....now that's a common car.......they're breeding like rabid bunnies round my way.

I am massive fan of the GTI (having had 3 myself) and I half expected to not love the R as much, but boy was I wrong!  I just love it!  Understated it is but actually rather menacing looking from the front which doesn't always come across in photos, and as much as the quad tailpipes might seem 'silly' to some, once you've got them, they add something extra to the car, and suddenly 2 tailpipes seems lacking.

I'm not a massive fan of Lapiz myself but never been a blue car person.  Now black, that's another matter!

As for the whole 'owning' thing, I do own my R outright, and I like 'owning' a car, but I couldn't care less how someone chooses to pay for their car.  True, there's people that wouldn't be in an R if it wasn't for the former lease deals, but so what! They will move on quickly enough to something else. There's plenty of people in R's who appreciate it for what it is (a fast Golf) and would like to do their bit for helping to build some R heritage.

You certainly can't call the R 'common'.
I don't think any of the sporty Golfs are particularly common on our roads compared to other manufacturers.
I mean 1 series BMWs are incredibly common and they are all pretending to be fast hatches

Yes, but not all Lapiz R's look like yours. (where's the grovelling emoji, lol).

And even though I'm not a blue car person, it's tells you something that I very nearly ordered a Lapiz myself, it was the only other colour on my shortlist.  Then I bottled it and went DBP, cos it's just so much easier to keep clean.
