It does make the engine look a bit scruffy without the plastic cover.
I had the cover on my 2013 GTI but don't have it on my current car.
If I hadn't been in a rush and had thought about it at the time I'd have whizzed the one out of my GTI's engine bay and kept it.
Again, it depends on how often you open the bonnet and whether you're into under bonnet detailing whether this would bother you much. The one thing the engine covers are useful for is routing, holding and covering over the cables for a tuning box!
