Really p*****s me off when people mention mid life crisis.
I'm 52 and have ordered my first GTI.
What should I have ordered, a Nissan Qashqai or similar pseudo SUV?
Most people don't have enough disposable income when they are younger to afford the car of their dreams(whatever that may be).
It's just a knee jerk jealous reaction to call it a mid life crisis.
Rant over

At 52 you should be driving something like a Nissan Note or a Citroen Picasso in a sage green hue

My midlife crisis purchase was my Mk2. I fancied one as I couldn't afford one in my late teens when I really, really wanted one. As for new cars, be it a GTI/D/.:R, if I wanted one now, I'd buy one. Perhaps because they are so attainable theses days, it takes the 'special purchase' feeling out of them.

If I had bought a big bumper GTI 16V in 1990, I would have been like the cat that got the cream, but now... a new GTI/D/.:R would be just another car, albeit a nice one.

Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Cheap personal lease deal have certainly made cars like this a lot more common on the roads.

Too true. .:R's are like dog shiit (gets everywhere) these days. There can't be any sense of achievement for those that choose to rent them.

Where I am in Manchester, I see a fair number of R's, and a lot of GTD's. Hardly any GTI's.

And yet I drove around about 400 miles on Saturday up to Yorkshire, and I didn't see one R.  Couple of GTI's and lots of GTD's.  I really don't think they're as common as leasegate will have you believe.

You are as old as you feel. and when people usually younger than yourself say mid life crisis I think its just a bit of  the green eyed monster rearing his ugly head!

Leasegate did put more R's on the road, than might have otherwise been, but the great reviews also played their part in that, as did good dealer discounts (of which I took advantage), and whilst that does reduce its exclusivity, it's certainly not to the degree that some make out, or are almost gleeful to believe, lol.

In any case, even if it's as common as the aforementioned dog sh!t, if it's the right car for me, I'll take it, regardless of how many are around.

For me, obtaining a certain car is not so much a sense of achievement, that comes through non monetary things, family and work.  For instance last week I unexpectedly recieved an award from my Chief Exec for outstanding achievement and contribution to the organisation.  Whilst I'm not normally one for all that kind of thing, it was nice to get it, and I felt a sense of achievement.  Car-wise, the achievement is looking after it and keeping it nice.
