Picked up my GTD & removed the protective wrappings, labels etc myself.
Gently hosed off the leaves and crud on returning home.
Before I rush into things will solvents like Tardis remove both iron contaminants and any remaining adhesive ?
If so do I need to hose the car with water i.e. wet it first, before applying Tardis by hand spray panel by panel ?
Any advice on the sequence or the best way to do it such as use microfibre cloths ?
I don't want to damage the paint surface before I even get to the stage of applying polish and sealants.
Many thanks for any advice ...
Hi TwoSheds.
I’ve just done mine this last weekend just gone and someone asked the same question which is in the ‘what have you done’ thread but here’s the procedure I used:
Important to start off with a good wash to get any grit, dirt off otherwise you'll just be rubbing that into the paintwork when you apply the Tardis or Iron remover. So a thorough wash. I snow foamed and then 2 bucket wash, rinse and dry.
Then I moved onto the decontamination phase, starting with the Iron X first. However it doesn’t really make much difference if you do it the other way round starting with tar remover first.
I started with the roof first, then one side of the car, including the wheels, then the other side, the rear and front. You could do it a panel at a time but I find a few at once if fine. I sprayed it on, let it dwell for 5 mins (less time if it's sunny), gave it a gentle rub over with a very soft Micro Fibre and then rinsed off thoroughly and dried it off as the next step - tar remover needs to be applied to a dry surface. Then onto the Tardis.
Similar procedure, applied to a dry car, either sprayed on directly or applied with a very soft Micro Fibre cloth a panel or two at a time, then wiped over gently with a MF, and rinsed off thoroughly. Don't let the solvent dry on the car, I wiped over almost immediately and concentrated efforts on the areas where I knew there was glue residue from the stickers. The residue melted off easily so there wasn’t the need to ‘scrub’ away at it, just apply a little extra Tardis to the areas where the glue is evident and wipe over gently until it has dissolved away. No abrasive action was required at all. Then rinse off very thoroughly.
Finally wash the car, rinse and dry. Or if you are claying you don’t need to dry it off just move onto that step.
Hope this helps.
