16v misfire - Air filter / mixture problem?
« on: 28 September 2015, 19:30 »
Hi all,

Been struggling with a misfire ever since i bought the car almost 2 years ago. So much other stuff has needed sorting in the mean time.

Anyway, engine splutters between 3000/3500rpm.

The previous owner whacked a K&N on it and I'm thinking the engine is running lean because of it. I'm not the best, mechanically speaking, but am I right in thinking that if you stick an aftermarket filter on, the engine needs to be calibrated to cope with the added airflow?

Anyone else had problems with this? I'd love to put the original filter back on but that's going to be no easy job as i'm missing a ton of connectors etc.

First of all, blaming the filter...does this sound like a legit cause of the misfire?

Cheers guys,

Tim

Could be a host of things causing the problem.

It would not be hard to find someone breaking a 16v so you could get all the bits you need to put it back as it was made.I suspect someone here will have the stuff to do it

You've had a misfire before haven't you? I seem to remember your signature.

What has been changed so far ref the misfire?  I don't think it would hurt to lose the induction kit on to try and eliminate the issue.  Is this an intermittent problem or is it always there between those rpm?

haha :D still same old problem but somewhat less severe this time.

Back then, the thing was cutting out down the motorway. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure that out.

Tried:

New fuel pump
Crank Sensor
Throttle body clean
Plugs / leads etc
and lots more that I can't put my finger on now...

Still to no avail. Eventually had a mechanic take the ignition system to bits. Turned out the distributor was f*cked.

Aaaaanyway, that got sorted and it no longer died at random times. In fact the car is running really nicely but it's just that pesky 3000-3500 rpm range when it splutters (not 2000-3000 like i said in that previous post).

Process of elimination points me to the filter
