Hi,

I got my GTI earlier in the week. I've tried two Android phones and neither want to play. You can see the Android Auto app start on the phone and you can see the list of approved apps, enable/disable the connection from the phone end, etc,  but the head unit just says that the data transfer failed and that's that. No amount of messing about has helped so far.

It sounds simple enough but I'm wondering if there's a host of per-requisite settings/items that need to be on or off on the phone before it will play. When you plug the phone in, it's immediately recognised as a USB storage device so maybe that's interfering with things. I'll have another attempt today.

Then I tried car-net - that was an abject failure too. The only place I can find to register that's in English is the US site which appears to be just for the E-UP, GTE, etc. I registered, but the site refuses to recognise my car's VIN.

From the car side, I set-up a link to the hotspot on my mobile (the car could see the WiFi in the house too - so if there are any big updates required I'll do them over that) but unless you registered on the car-net portal with your the VIN the fun stops there.

On a final note, I've had the head unit freeze and reboot a couple of times whilst playing MP3s, I can't tell if they are the root cause, nevertheless, annoying.

Neil.

So,

I can report back that I've managed to get it all working, but, don't get too excited, functionality is a tad limited as it stands right now.

Android Auto - Even though my phone had AA installed, I installed another copy from Google Play. Plugged it in and eventually you can add the phone and you get Google Maps navigation with voice input even if you don't have that option in the car. You get 90 days of Google Music, just make sure you've got enough data on your mob to cover it... Erm, and that's about it.

Mirrorlink - I must admit I was expecting something close to a 'mirror' of what was on the phone, however, so far all I see is the icons for Mirrorlink enabled apps which in my case are the various VW ones - mind you it does have the journey tracker which records stuff like how hard you accelerate, brake, max speed, G force and what have you - which looks about the most fun one.

Switching between AA and Mirrorlink isn't particularly simple. It appears that you have to go into the settings change the preferred connection type between the two, then disconnect and reconnect the device - I haven't found a simpler way yet.

Finally car-net, I'm now registered and functional. The process is straightforward, however, it fell over several times and was really slow.

The link for registration is as follows:

https://www.volkswagen-car-net.com/portal/en_GB/web/gb/register?command=c

Eventually it will give you a code. Get the car connected to the web by tethering to your phone or what have you and enter the code under Menu | Car-Net | Registration - this bit took numerous attempts but my mobile signal was very weak it may be better for you guys.

I've got Discover Nav so I get weather, news (you can add things like BBC news, sport, etc, as feeds via the car-net portal), parking, petrol, online POI, personal POI import, etc. Not loads but a few things. I'm sure we'll get more in the future.

Apologies for the essay!

Cheers, Neil.

Have been searching everywhere to find the specs of both MIB II systems ..and I (believe) finally found them!

MIB II Discover: http://webspecial.volkswagen.de/infotainment/de/de/radionav-start/Discover-Media-ab-2015.html
MIB II Discover Pro: http://webspecial.volkswagen.de/infotainment/de/de/radionav-start/Discover-Pro.html

However the above links are German-spec, which does seem to differ slightly (wi-fi, SSD size..), but it does show that they do have identical resolution, which means that smaller Discover would have a sharper screen.

Note that the German specs don't seem in line with UK cars, which according to VW UK has : "Discover Pro touch-screen DVD nav/radio system with integrated voice control. 8" colour touch-screen with activated voice control system - responds to voice commands for navigation, CD, DVD and radio functions. 64 GB SSD hard drive. Pre-loaded European navigation data, 3D map view, three calculated routes (fast, short, eco), dynamic navigation based on TMC , branded points of interest, traffic sign display and SD card reader x 2. Includes three years Car-Net 'Guide and Inform'.

As for the processor power, I could only find for the specs for Discover (not Pro) which in the mk8 Passat has 'Faster processors. The new generation of devices is characterised by better system performance. Consider the “Discover Media”, the radio-navigation system with 6.5-inch display: Compared to the first generation, performance of the CPU (main processor) was more than doubled from 950 MIPS (million instructions per second) to 2,500 MIPS. link: http://www.vwvortex.com/news/volkswagen-news/detail-new-passat-generation-8-2/.

Hope this helps!

MX, when did you order, as far as I'm aware anything ordered after 2nd week in June will have this, winter seats and keyless entry as standard.

Don't mean to be pedantic but it does make a difference

Its not any car ordered after the 2nd week in June, it will be any car built after week 22 which is May 25th
So in theory you could have ordered in March or even earlier and still get the updated build revisions.

Its all to do when your car actually goes to build.
