MOT fail-need advice..
« on: 27 July 2015, 17:21 »
So took the Golf for the MOT today...and it failed..

This is what it failed on.

RBT service brake efficiency 41% (what does that mean?)

Emissions- (this can be passed in future as car was not even close to warm when tested..)
Front front brake binding 3.7.B.1
Rear brake valve damaged 3.6.A.2c-this was what I expected it to fail on..
Nearside rear wheel bearing has excessive play 2.6.2
Offside rear wheel bearing has excessive play 2.6.2
Service brake: efficiency below requirements 3.7.B.7-probably just needs tightening I hope..

So will need advice on the bearings and how to sort them and the front brake binding issue..

Can I remove the bearings and get them back in without a press?

As the rear wheel bearings are tapered, you can pinch them up it remove the play. Don't over tighten them though.

Front brakes want a strip and re greese, rears want the same and handbrake adjusting.

Couple of hours work.

Tbh with rear bearing they are changed so easily that I'd just replace them. 10£ a side with OEM quality parts.
With these MOT results I'd take rear brakes apart and see if they are still serviceable and if they are relubricate.

No point replacing the bearing if there's nothing wrong with them, just might need pinching up.
