NSF wheel!
« on: 17 June 2015, 12:15 »
Hi all I haven't been on here long but I have a 1.8T, I have had it for a few weeks. One of the first things I did was change the NSF wheel hub and bearing (garage fitted) about a week later when driving on the motorway I slowed down from about 70 to 60 and there was this weird wobbling sensation in the wheel and my passenger could feel it too, it makes a deep throbbing sound when it wobbles. The weird thing is when I turn the wheel even slightly to the right it doesn't do it at all but if I turn slightly left it makes it worse. I had the wheel of and checked the brake, it is old and has a hefty lip around the edge but is still straight, one thing I did notice that was different from brakes I have seen before is that there is no screw holding the disk in place, is this normal for the 1.8T??? the car does sometimes feel like it is very slightly moving from side to side when turning left as if the wheel is loose but it is definitely very tightly on! I will attach some pictures that I took, hopefully someone can help me out....Please!

p.s I have used the search on loads of forums but no one has seemed to have solve it so I hope that someone with a better mechanical knowledge can point me in the right direction for my case.

Thanks!!

I would be very wary of driving it in that condition. There's a couple of things to check but to be honest you should be taking it back!
Have you jacked up that corner and (on axle stands) given that wheel a good wobble? Spin it and look for any run out in wheel or disc.
Check all your wheel nuts are tight.
Did they reuse the driveshaft nut? :/
That screw doesn't have to be there in the disc, its just they're to stop the disc falling off when the wheel is removed.

Or did you do the work yourself?

It feels perfectly fine when it is under 60, however luckily I have 2 cars so I don't have to use it! Unfortunately I can't take it back as I have relocated to Manchester from Newcastle  I have wobbled the wheel a little and there doesn't seem to be excessive play, I do seem to remember him saying something about the nut but I wasn't really paying attention unfortunately, I am just trying to cross off parts that might be failing i.e the CV joint, I changed one on my old polo a while back and before that went it was just clicking round corners, I am going to change the brakes asap and see if that makes any difference. Oh and the nuts are on very tightly, I thought it might be that as well. I am going to upload some pictures soon and you can see there is ALOT of grease inside the wheel.

Thanks

Grease inside the wheel is most likely from busted cv boot. The garage that way back did wheel bearing on ours split the cv boot during bearing fitment ;)
That's not to put 2&2 together and associate that noise and wobble with a bust cv boot. I think there's more to it buddy! Get a 2nd opinion from a local garage, generic tyre place or somewhere does mots should be able to diagnose this.

Just to update I bought an ebay VAG-COM cable and after plugging it in and clearing all the fault codes the wobbling has stopped! It seems that it was electrical, I did this a few days ago and I have been on motorways with no dramas, problem solved I hope!

Possibly, I haven't had any issues with lights on the dash since clearing, the brakes could do with a change both pads and disks so I am going to do that when I can afford it until then it seems to be sorted (fingers crossed!)
