Winter tyres/wheels
« on: 13 June 2015, 11:43 »
Hi I run a GTI with sport pack-ie big front  brake calipers, standard wheels are 18" I am looking to get ready for next winter and need some snow tyres and wheels(we get a lot of snow in Sheffield), I was intending to get a set of fairly cheap alloys with tyres and ideally would get 17" rims with appropriate tyres, a deeper profile works better on winter tyres and give me more choice (and cheaper). Dealer suggests 17"rims will clear the calipers but it looks very tight- does anyone have experience of this

17" will fit but it depends on wheel (how the inside is shaped, offset etc) - I'd go for 205 50 17 or 225 45 17 on a mk7 (unless you can fit 16" then 205 55 16 but that's not a possibility for you otherwise I'd fling you my A3 wheels with winter tyres).
On the GTI I'd go for the wider ones but then look more carefully when choosing wheels so you can actually get snow chains on them (should it ever get that bad).

For tyres.... Nokian WR D3 or A3 are good and well priced. The D3 is rotation bound, i.e. you can't mix them diagonally, so if you want to keep one of your winter wheels in the car as a spare in summer rather than the dreadful space saver then go for the A3. Or if you want to go hard core and get THE BEST winter tyres in the world go for Nokian Hakkapeliitta, though they are probably among the most expensive winters you can get (even more expensive than Michelins and Pirellis).

If you want cheaper ones then think about the Avon IceToruing ST - my local tyre fitter only had these in stock for size I was after so had to go for them and was surprised how well a "made in England" winter tyre faired when I went to Austria for Christmas! If I replace them it will be Nokians though.

17's will fit fine, as above but 16's probably won't clear the brakes.
17's are a good size to source second hand as people sell them cheaply when upgrading to 18" wheels and there are a huge amount of VW group wheels that will fit.
Assuming a 7.5" wheel, keep offset a lower number than 50 and higher than 40 and try and go for a fairly flat spoke to clear the callipers as they're quite big.
Also pay attention to the style of the wheel as you don't really want to be scrubbing a complex spoked pattern with a toothbrush whilst squatting in a puddle when the outside temp is around zero degrees. Been there, done that and don't recommend it!

I would keep to 7" wide wheels for 225 tyres in winter, 7.5" no way will you be able to fit snow chains should you ever have to.

As above though I would recommend simplistic wheels in winter to keep cleaning to a minimum.... I went a bit overboard though as you can see on photos in this linked post :D

Words of wisdom there, I don't really get snow or sub zero temperatures in my neck of the woods so take your comment on board.
Good advice.

Suggest you consider www.mrwinterwheels.co.uk when you are ready to buy.

Have had first class service from them and good prices.

They start to get a wide range of well known winter tyres in stock from August/ September time

To give an idea of recommended sizings, if you scroll down to page , this shows the 'official' winter wheel and tyre package on a mk7 gti (The 16s on page 8 specifically mention they can't be used on the GTI PP, so the 17s are the minimum for that)

Anyone know if the 17" Monza off a MK5 GTI will fit?

Can't see why not. At worst they might need a 5mm spacer but I expect they'll fit straight on and clear the calipers.
