Windows 10 Free upgrade?
« on: 01 June 2015, 11:23 »
Just had something pop up from Microsoft, they're offering me Windows 10 as an upgrade from 7 for free...

Anyone else had this?

I signed up for updates but not heard anything yet

But yes all Windows 7 users and after will be offered a free upgrade to 10; providing your computer can handle it......

System requirements

Basically, if your PC can run Windows 8.1, you're good to go. If you're not sure, don't worry – Windows will check your system to make sure it can install the preview.

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster

RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)

Free hard disk space: 16 GB

Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver

A Microsoft account and Internet access

I tick all those boxes, I just hope it gets rid of the old Windows 7 install as I have it all running on a SSD and space is at a premium lol

OEM Drivers will be the issue.

I just installed an SSD into my laptop and had trouble getting some drivers for Windows 7.......luckily I could use Linzi's laptop to find and download them

Looks like it will be more fun and games

And Wes, just get a bigger SSD

The problem I have with Windows is all the legacy poop that it is burdened with.
That and the fact that you have all kinds of ill conceived and mismatched UI.
and yeah, the drivers..........

Owning a Windows box is a drain on my time I can well do without.

And if anyone mentions switching to Linux.... I tried that, I nearly disappeared up my own ar3sehole.

By the way this is due to a Windows Update that you or the PC downloaded or installed, if you don't want this nagware / adware, Google it and you will be able to find what to uninstall.

Yeah that is the eventual plan Rhys, just haven't got a spare £120 kicking about at the mo for a 512GB version...

Fair point. I just splashed £80 on a 256gig SSD. Wish I had done it sooner though!!! My laptop is 4 years old and its reduced loading times from minutes to seconds. It now boots to Windows in under 30 seconds when previously I could go and make a cup of tea.........

Whats it crammed with?? Have you got an external drive you could use for your media?? I got a WD MyBookLive hooked up to my router which stores all my media
