Used car sales are the worst they have been for along time..... This is mainly due to most dealer groups offering attractive discounts on new cars as the new car targets increase year after year.

That means getting 10% discount on a new car is pretty much the norm now. The impact that has is used examples have to be thousands upon thousands cheaper than new cars. Andy is right a 3 door manual is the purest form however its not the easiest to resell. 90 % of people buy a GTI now because its a practical hot hatch, being a 3 door you loose the practical element for a lot of prospective buyers.

If you have a 3 door manual to make it desirable it must have things that people want such as performance pack, Sat nav etc.

The best thing to do is call a few dealers within a reasonable distance of you and give them the details rest assured if they have a buyer for it they will be straight on the phone.

Darling, sweet, Rebecca.

This was pretty obvious from day one when we met under the arches! I must admit that experience was quite chilling. But help is at hand.

Pathological hatred is a mental disorder which many people suffer with. Hitler was a prime example. I can assure you here and now you are not totally or criminally insane yet, but are well on the torturous path of becoming so. Would you like to see my other half who is a Consultant Psychiatrist? Mates rates will apply.

Looking forward to your response.

Best wishes,
Asker

Dearest Asker

Thank you for your unsolicited professional assessment of current mental state   Born of a Jewish mother, I am slightly dismayed at being lumped into the same category as Hitler - thanks

My hatred of BMWs, irrational as it is, is the result of a traumatic period experienced in a previous work incarnation.  Said trauma involved harassment from a group of 'clients' I shall politely describe as a nano step away from the fully fledged crooks of the East End, and whose motor of choice was an ever changing variety of shiny Bimmers.  It's been a few years now, but on a biannual basis I get a LinkedIn request from one of these delightful people lest I forget.

As much as I appreciate the kind offer of personally recommended and generously discounted psychiatric treatment, I will decline, suffer in silence, and continue to shudder when I see the blue and white roundel appearing in my rear view mirror

Your darling, sweet Rebecca

Dearest darling, sweet Rebecca,

I did not realise you also belonged to THE faith. I am so sorry to mention that fatherless son's name.
We really should try and avoid buying cars made by his decedents.
With a name like Rebecca I should have guessed. How very remiss of me.
Whenever you need our assistance, day or night, rain or shine, winter or summer, we will be there for you. And, there will be no charge.

Much love,
Asker

My dearest Asker

Ah, a kindred spirit then?  I however am impure, a religious mongrel, having a Catholic father.  But I do get the double whammy - persecution AND guilt

Yes, why are we buying German cars?  Do we value design and quality over all else?

Thank you for your lovely heartfelt words.

I fear we may get reprimanded soon for going some way off topic

Anyway....back to the topic...

I'm being told that as a 3 door manual in white with cloth, it's the worst possible spec.

Well it hasn't got the extra cost items like 5 doors, DSG or leather.

I suppose if you measure the value above a base price for make, model, year and mileage then without those things its obviously worth less than one with all of those things. Its definitely not unsalable - its quite a common spec for everyone here!

With it still being quite a new model and still highly desirable, I'd have thought a lower spec would have made it more attractive actually - and anyhow you have a couple of bells and whistles anyway.

Does sound like he's taking the pee though, I'd have thought you should expect a bit more for it from a dealer. Is that PX or cash sale?

Saw a 5 door Carbon Grey GTD today on Nogaro 18" wheels. Best Golf colour and best wheels. Looked really superb.

To put a value on 5 doors, DSG and leather - they enhance used p/x values (between 2 and 3 years old) by around £600, £500 and £300 respectively. When you go PCP, 3 doors and 5 doors are about the same monthly cost as you see pretty much all of the money back spent on 5 doors when it is time to trade or sell. You just need to look at the VW finance examples and the GFV is £600 more for 5 doors. Go down a size or 2 (UP, Polo) and you don't see as much, but on a car the size of a Golf, many potential buyers would consider 5 doors essential.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

It's good to see Lee's take on it as someone who spend years dealing with actual customers coming through the door.
And for anyone buying I'd always say give Lee a shout as he's a the opposite of the salesman in the Golf Ball Steering Wheel thread!

As per Lee's post really, you can get really good deals on new cars nowadays as the manufacturers want to shift metal and they've seen the trend in how people buy things like mobile phones and other lifestyle products so make it easy (if not exactly cheap) to purchase high value items (cars) with minimal up front cost.
When you look at the fact you can get say 11% off an R (real life figure I've been given myself in the last week), or possibly a fair bit higher off a GTI with the £1250 discount added to the initial discount. Also VW do around 6.5% on finance for a new car against something like 10.9% interest I saw quoted on VW's used website recently it means that despite your newish car still having load of warranty left it HAS to be significantly cheaper than a new model for anyone to even consider test driving it, never mind actually buying it. Also factor in that VW supply dealers with their own pre registered low mileage cars they give to staff to run around in which mean that a sub 2 year old GTI has competition from all angles.

As for the fact of it being white and three doors - well people that buy hot hatches will order three door hatches quite happily, and just look at the smaller hot hatches such as Peugeot's 208 GTI or the Fiesta ST which have stayed true to the original ethos of lightest weight, stiffest body shell and powerful engine; but when you get up to Golf size then people tend to be a bit more discerning and 5 doors are far more common.
If you look on the mk5 GTI forums you'll see a much younger demography of buyer who will seek out the 3 door cars more as they appear more 'sporty' and fit their 'image' more, but these are older cars and I think younger people are now looking at the ease of getting newish cars on PCP's or loans now too. I'm not a highly paid statistician, but I can see buying habits changing a hell of a lot since I was younger when only kids with rich parents had newish cars. Youngsters will see the new numberplate and the latest gadgets and, I think, just as importantly they may have been stung by big repair bills on their older cars too as modern cars are full of things that are incredibly expensive to fix and ever more complex.
So the trick for the manufacturers now isn't the actual up front ££££ but more the affordability of their products to keep them turning over. I highly doubt VW make a heap on used car sales per se but they will always been keen to keep the newer models within the dealership umbrella as it's the finance side where the money is made (plus all the crappy add ons).

So, white 3 door GTI's are great for youngsters and old farts like me trying to recapture their youth after years of buying 5 door hatches because we 'had to' but don't appeal to as many people as safe and steady silver/grey 5 door cars.
Sorry white 3 door haters, but I get loads of random compliments on my white 3 door GTI from people I've never met, but invariably these people have much more staid transport of their own. They might like my shiny white GTI, and say they'd love to own one - but alas when it comes to shelling out their own money, they don't buy one...
