Rattling from rear end
« on: 09 May 2015, 18:24 »
Hey guys,

I noticed a couple of weeks ago that when I am driving my car at lower speeds (anything to 30 mph) there seems to be a rattle in the back of the car. I cannot quite tell where it is coming from but it sounds like it is from the underneath of the vehicle. It tends to occur when I go over bumps or on an uneven road, but can occur on a smooth road occasionally. Do any of you guys have an idea what it could be?

Thanks!!

Id try adjusting the boot stoppers first thing....I spent some time tracking down a rear end rattle....turned out to be the boot.

Gonz - this is a suspension issue which is very well documented and discussed (your symptoms are identical) - try a Google search and you will be directed towards a number of forum threads that were active around six to ten months ago. WV  claim the issue is now resolved - how old is your car?

I have had the spare wheel causing a rattle and also a heat shield. like said before the other rattle I have had has been down to the bump stops on the boot which needed adjusting.

I've just had the shock absorbers swapped out, got the car back Friday.
It's definitely improved but still get the odd "thunk" on very uneven roads.
Dealer blamed a defective absorber but if that's the case how come is still there?
I'm giving it a few days to see if it gets as bad as it was then I'll take it back again.

Sorry to hear that! Never good when that happens. If it persists and you take it back, let me know what they say please.
Hope its sorted soon.

I will have a look at the spare wheel and boot to see if there is anything that can be rattling in there.

Hey again guys.

Looked at all the boot and spare tyre, nothing seemed to be able to make the rattling sound from there. After driving it this morning it seems to actually be getting worse. What would you recommend to be the next step?

Thanks

Have you tried getting someone else to drive it while you sit in the back trying to trace the noise?
Take the parcel shelf out and have a seat down and see what you can find.
You might find just by doing that your noise has stopped!!
Could it be the tailgate rattling against the body of the car?

My experience of taking a car back to the dealer to cure a noise has been poor, unless they know exactly what is causing it. I'd personally want to locate it myself first and then if I was unable to fix it I'd take it back to the dealer.

I have tried locating the noise, but I just can't seem to be able to locate it! It is really starting to frustrate me.
