Still getting bad maf problems
« on: 13 April 2015, 22:45 »
Hello, I'm still having trouble finding out why my car keeps eating maf sensors, (1.8t Aum) I've put 4 new genuine ones on in the past year and they last a month tops before they compleatly go,  within a week the car starts to get a flat spot, and by the End of the month it gets that bad that I get about 2psi of boost and the car runs like a pig and it's just about un drivable, I disconnect it at it runs perfect, it's not remapped, I just have a few basic mods, but it's done it ever since I brought it, and it was standard when I got it, has anyone had this problem? It's becoming that much of a pain it's making me want to get rid of it haha, I have vag com I have no fault codes only one witch is because of my decat, but with the maf disconnected,  the tc light comes on and I get a system to rich and a maf sensor implausible signal or something, really stuck now, any help will be much appreciated,  cheers

What sort of filter do you have on it?

Some of the aftermarket ones which you have to oil can corrode or cause the MAFs to fail prematurely...

The Green S2000 filters are not oiled and the red ones are from what I have seen, the problem with it not being oiled is that small particles can still still get in, the oiled ones pull the oil in... both will prematurely kill the MAF.

Have you tried cleaning the MAF rather than replacing it? CNC cleaner I think its called is what I use

I do have a red one but I'm pretty sure it wasn't oiled as it was dry and you can normally tell if they have been oiled, I've literally tried everything and it still keeps doing it,

They don't look oiled, but I'm 99.9% sure they are.
get some of the CLC cleaner and give that a whirl and see how you get on, how long have you had the S2000 filter on, as they are paper they are classed as a serviceable item so need replacing yearly if not sooner

Yeah I've tried it already mate, what confuses me is why it still did the same thing with the standard airbox, I like the noise of the cone filter, can you recommend a set up that still gives you good noise but won't kill the maf? Thanks

If you've killed a few MAFs its usually from oil based filters because as it sucks the air in it loosens the oil and the oil attaches the wire, the MAF works by heating a thin piece of wire up and as the air flows over it, it cools it down, more speed = more air

You want a non oiled filter really, I tried loads of options and finally settled again on a smoothed airbox with a DSG intake and a pipercross panel filter

If you want noise, either a cheap cold air intake with a decent cone on the end or carbonio will be your best bet. My carbonio is fairly loud lol
