I am going for the drug dealer look

^^

That only works on a black car.  Carbon grey is too classy for drug dealer look even with 90% tints.

Its such BS and VW UK really don't seem to know what they are doing. So much inconsistency on the website at the moment.

Price is actually lower as if you take the old price then add DNS (£750), KESSY (£360) and Winter Pack (£360) you get £27,485 compared to the £26,935 a 3dr Manual GTD will now cost you

And it is ridiculous they aren't applying those changes to the R, no logic at all.

It's getting a bit of a mess.
The actual components of the bits they're adding don't cost VW much in ££ terms so it's easy to add them then hike up the price a bit taking full advantage of the exchange rate.

My theory is that after the mk6 R being a bit of a duffer sales wise (also had crap standard spec) the mk7R has become the default performance choice after the cheap leases and rave reviews meaning lots of private buyers too, so is a) selling well and b) not that much dearer than a PP GTI.
What I suspect VW are doing is waiting for the ED40 or other performance niche car to come along to slot in the middle, then they can add extra spec to the R and hike the price up a bit to clear a bit of room in the price list for either a more powerful GTI or one with a few lightweight panels which it will share with the R400/420 costing maybe another £1200 or 1500 over a PP GTI.
They probably also look at the fact that people that lease R's just want a fast Golf and don't bother with options and people that can afford to buy a £30K plus hatchback can afford to spec it up and probably do quite a bit so the actual financial hit to them doesn't hurt much and VW can keep the list base price at a point where the R doesn't look too expensive against competitors.

Mind you, as it's started raining I've abandoned car cleaning for another year  and just had a nose around the VW Configurator to see what's been added to the other more 'interesting' VW models.
As of about five minutes ago the Scirocco could be ordered with electric folding wing mirrors for the huge sum of...

... five pounds.

Interesting reading this thread as I am going in to VW Birmingham tomorrow to test drive a pp gti.

I don't want to order one of there is an ed40 on the way as I would love one of them instead. With all the changes means an inevitable rise. When does the price hike start. As I may look at the numbers for the pp and the R tonight.

Spec would be carbon grey leathers keyless tech pack and parking pack

We won't see the ed40 until late 2016 at the earliest

The price rise goes live from midnight Sunday so if you can secure a deal at Sunday's retail price you may well get a bunch of freebies!
As Beddie says, late next year for ED40. I oredered my GTI with that in mind hoping the ED would be released when my GTI hits three years old (by far the longest I've kept a car I think, not including cheapo bangers I run about in which I keep until they fall apart).
I think we will see hints of an ED40 disguised as something else at Worthersee this year and next year before it gets released at a motor show proper in 2016.

This would seem to make some sense.  As it stands it's a very narrow pricing gap between the GTI and the R, for the ED40 to slot into.  That said, to an extent VW are just making it all up as they go along in response to market forces.
