The GTI is quite torquey and revs a lot quicker than a GTD but I am a fan of the latter's gutsy delivery.
I've just checked my long term average on the GTI and it's showing about 29.5 getting around 330 to a tank most weeks. Bear in mind I live in an area with lots of big arse hills and bendy roads so it would easily do much better somewhere flatter.
It's swings and roundabouts as to which is the better car of the two, some days you'd prefer one and some days the other. They both drive really well but with different characteristics.
Unlike the R, the GTI does run just as happily on 95 RON, so if you can ease 360 miles out of a GTI tankful (not that difficult) it doesn't cost much to run.
The biggest killer for you would be cost to change with such a new car depreciating heavily. So see what figures they offer you before falling for the GTI's charms.
