Hi folks, new member and first post here, so play nice!

Picked up my first GTI at the weekend - been contemplating taking the plunge for a while now and finally done it. Absolutely delighted so far - just 4 days in, and not much more than the commute to work since the weekend, but what a car.

Any views out there on the pros and cons of Standard unleaded versus Super unleaded? I see the fuel cap sticker recommends Super, but I've been driving diesels for the last 12 years or so, hence no personal experience of this.

All views welcome.

If u can afford it and think it's worth it, buy super. Higher grade fuel so will be better for the engine, more economical and should improve performance.

In the real world though I'm not sure it's worth it. I'm not sure it will make a noticeable difference and personally I'd rather spend my money on other things!

There's been quite a few tests and comparisons done on this and the jury's still out as to whether you get any real benefit.  There's always two camps of thought.   However the mk6 gti was optimised to run on  98RON higher octane fuel.  Interestingly the mk7 GTI is optimised to run on 95RON.

I've always used super unleaded, preferably Shell V Power Nitro+ so don't know any different really.  Car has always run like a dream.

It's personal choice at the end of the day.

You've spent a lot of money on a great car and want to save a few pence on cheap fuel? I use V power in all my cars and bikes, get a shell card and you get a little bit back to offset the cost :) Enjoy

With the dramatic reduction in the cost of fuel, maybe makes sense to treat it to the V Power. 5th Gear did do a test a while back and the more expensive fuel did deliver slightly higher BHP also felt more responsive. I would think though and i've never had a shot in a GTi it'll be a bit like Captain Picard telling Wesley to go to warp speed 9!!!! Think my diesel dog get to about warp 6!

The attached fifth gear fuel test video may help you make up your mind. It is from 2012 so things may have moved on:

i got told from a guy who knows his engines inside out and swears by v power. different stations will have different octane levels but cleans your engine, makes it work more efficient and obviously the  increased bhp and mpg!

Iv'e always used Vpower (well since the new engine) can't say I feel any difference and the MPG isn't any better but I don't mind spending the extra, it's only 5-8p and as someone mentioned earlier get a shell card and you can get a little back every few month.

Alternatively if your lucky to have a Tesco near you, apparently the 99 octane they do IS shell comes from the same refinery just not branded thus it's cheaper. Unfortunately the Tesco's near me doesn't sell it so stuck with Shell...
