Consumables during the engine change
« on: 26 February 2015, 11:05 »
Thinking of starting the engine swap within the next few weeks, but want all the parts, before I start..after a having a quick look yesterday, I think i.'m going to need brake/clutch fluid, exhaust gaskets, cable ties and jubilee clips..can you think of anything else I've forgotten?

Also, as I'm going from auto to manual, will I need to change just the master cylinder, or the whole brake servo? Obviously the auto master cylinder hasn't the pipe work for the clutch slave cylinder, not like the look of the nipples on the donor clutch slave either...can see it snapping...worth buying a new one, and changing the whole slave??

Pedal box? Easy to remove? Dash out job? Also the clocks. Easy to remove? The Cabrio has the blue backlight, the donor has green, is that easy to swap, or is it just not worth it?

Thanks.

Don't forget power steering fluid and coolent is needed, you shouldn't need to swap the master cylinder. Yes dash out job for the pedalbox.

PM me if you like.

Timing kit and pump worth a shout if you don't know how good it is.
Worth looking at oil leaks and other jobs on the donor engine while its out, gaskets etc.
Have you run the valver to temp and checked the fans come on etc?
I snapped the flexible link on the dp once and done a load of wires in my time, make sure all the bits are free when you lift the engine out

Thanks for the replies, yes, I had forgotten power steering fluid and coolant, despite reading up yesterday on it  :nerd:

The master cylinders do look different, will double check later tonight, thanks for the offer of pm-ing you, will be taking you up on that

vwbush, timing kit is a good shout, never done a Cambelt change before, something I've always kept away from...by choice :-) fans kick in as they should

What's the dp? Or am I being stupid?? (It is 3am!!)

Thanks!

Also with the miles your 16v has done I'd check the condition of the clutch if you have no paperwork to prove its been changed.

You'd be annoyed if you completed then after a few miles the clutch goes.....

It has some paperwork, will have a good look later, see what's what, the service book said a cambelt has been done, can't remember how long ago, or what mileage though, no receipt for it though.

Ahh, almost forgot to ask, once the change is done, 16v engine in cabby, what key do I use? The 8v key or 16v key? Sorry if that sounds dumb, but I'm assuming if you change the engine you need to use the 16v loom, ecu..which the immobiliser is coded to..the keys are different,

The 16v has this blade

The Cabrio has this blade

Ignition barrel change too?

Key wise you'll need the key (or chip) to match the ecu otherwise the immobiliser will kick in, so 16v ecu needs the 16v key to match (you can remove the chip and fit into the other key, a bit fiddly but saves changing barrel etc)

b.t.w don't forget it you need any parts to check my site

Brilliant, thanks for that mate. I'll look into trying to swap the chips then.

Don't know if this has already been mentioned but if you are changing from auto to manual you will have to bypass the inhibitor that the auto had (the safety switch that stops an auto being started unless it's in park or neutral ).I guess you will be using the loom from the donor car so this may not be an issue.

Your standard master cylinder should be o.k. but your reservoir will need changing to a 16v or vr6 one as they both have the nipple on for the pipe that goes to the slave. They just pull out/push in with a side to side wiggle.

Your pedal box should already have the bracket on to accomodate the extra pedal and mechanism for the clutch so you may not need to take dash out to add the parts.
