Thanks for the help not had chance to have a look at it yet been to busy with work should be able to get a chance to have a look tomorrow. I have let it get to 3/4 on the temperature gauge before and nothing happened.

In that case, I'd say reply #4 is applicable.

There's a two-way power connector on the way to the thermoswitch, a non-waterproof connector. This is what mine looked like when I tried to unplug it to check the connections were clean:



That was actually still working, somehow, but it must have been close to losing connectivity for ever.

A dodgy cap on the reservoir can cause this, as the system won't pressurize properly.  My old car boiled over before the fan came on due to the cap being duff.
