From the Baby GTI to the MK6 Daddy
« on: 06 February 2015, 18:42 »
Hi Guys & Gals,

New to the forum. Bit of a VW nut. Just recently traded in my Stage 2 Candy White Polo 6R GTI (which was my pride & joy for the past 3 years) for a 59 plate MK6 GTI in Reflex Silver, back in Dec 2014. Love how well the golf holds the road, and performance isn't as bad as i thought it would be coming from a 240bhp 7 Speed DSG pocket rocket.  :laugh:

Had a few VW's now, all the previous being Polos ( 9n3 1.9 TDI Sport, 9n3 1.8T 20V GTI and the latter 6R 1.4 TSI GTI)

Standard options on the golf are:

* Factory tints
* Leather heated seats (which are amazing on these cold north west mornings)

Mods already done

* Fitted an RNS510
* Fitted Cruise control
* VCDS Tweaks
* LED Numberplate Lamps
* Pressed plates

Just this week I've had the all so famous timing chain rattle haunt me, so thats just been done. New chain, tensioner and guide rails fitted. They also found a faulty VVT valve, so that got changed whilst it was all stripped down. Car sounds much nicer / smoother on start up now, and I'm also sleeping much better at night  :grin:

Future Mods

* 18" Alloys and New tyres - Really can't decide which alloys suit the relax silver
* Xenon DRL headlights
* R Style LED Tail Lights
* Air Intake
* Stage 1 Remap (APR, REVO or Custom Code - Undecided)

Anyway, ill leave it at that for now. Couple of pictures below of the Polo and my new project for all you pic whores  :tongue: :smiley:

Welcome, two cracking looking cars there  :cool:

Sounds like you've not wasted much time getting started on the golf.  At least you don't have to worry about the tensioner now (hopefully).  The leather looks in good condition for a 59 plate.  Some really show their age being very saggy and creased, but that looks good.

How does it feel after a 7 speed DSG?  Suppose it might feel a bit lacking in power after the nimble polo, but the map should sort that out.  Post up a few pics of possible alloy choices to get opinions, unless you'd rather not hear them  :grin:

Look forward to seeing how it progresses and of course more pics (from a self confessed pic whore)  :smiley:

The Polo GTI looks really nice, especially with the xenons.
How is it you didn't go for a new new Polo GTI?

What was the reliability like on your twin charged engine?
I bet it shifted when remapped!

Many many moons ago I had a 1.8T Polo GTI not too long after they came out in about 2007. Mine was an ex-VW press fleet car i think as I bought it a few months old and it had a similar reg to the cars in the magazine road tests. It had a high spec and depreciated very little in my ownership.
I ran VW Evolo 17" alloys and treated it to a dash of REVO.
The thing was hilarious once remapped but the driving position hurt my back for some reason so I sold it after a year and a bit. Old age must've been creeping in even back then!  :whistle:

Anyway, nice silver mk6 GTI, looks a good base for a project.
My first mk6 was silver and after trying several (about seven!) different sets of wheels on it I can safely say that anthracite grey looked the best.
The final set I had on it when I moved it on were grey VW Racing spec Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2's.
They looked really good against the silver.
VW Rotary 18s would look good but are a bit pricey bought new.
A set of grey BBS CKs would also look nice...

I had a 6R Polo until recently (an ordinary 1.4) before upgrading to the Golf, but I did consider a Polo GTI because used examples were coming down in price nicely.  I could have lived with the DSG gearbox even though I've always driven a manual, however it was the reported oil consumption problems that put me off, how was yours?

I also considered the BlueGT as well because it's quick and has that appealing ACT engine, but for the same money I thought the Golf would be a better overall choice.

I loved my Polo even though it was a bit slow.  I covered 30,000 miles in it in just over 2 years and it was very reliable.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the welcomes guys.

The polo wasn't too bad on oil to be honest. The day i picked it up from the garage it had 4 miles on the clock, i let the engine get to temperature and gave it a good kicking from the offset. If i remember correctly, it only ever used 3 litres in 40k miles. The only real issue i had with the car was the DSG box. In the early days it liked to lock out into safe mode in the most dangerous / awkward positions, I.E. pulling out of a busy junction, where the car would loose all drive. You had to push it back into Park and then back to drive for it to reset. After many months of argumentes and strong letters to VW customer services it finally got plugged in to VW Germany HQ computers for diagnostics where they altered the coding on the DSG box. Since that day it never really skipped a beat.

The car was very quick, certainly made a lot of jaws drop from the lights. Standard they are 6.9 secs to 60. This was sub 5 secs, and the DSG pops with the Milltek sounded awesome  :grin:

Only reason i never went for the new Polo GTI is because I've always loved the golfs, and after 3 polos i think the time had finally come to move on. When i saw this golf, and like Booth11 mentioned, the leather looked in really good condition for a 5 year old car, i just had to have it. I travelled all the way to Crawley from manchester for it  :shocked: But the drive home was great, fell in love straight away.

Ive got a few alloys in mind, will grab a couple of pics and post them up see what you guys think. Main ideas are the Glen alloys (Edition 35) either in silver, gunmetal or even diamond cut face. Always loved the BBS CK's just don't know how they'd look against the silver. And finally the new RS4 & S3 alloys, but can't seem to find any pics of the MK6 fitted with some.

Look forward to hearing all your thoughts  :smiley: Cheers Nathan

Nice taste in VWs!

How does the performance compare at stock since they are both rated 6.9s? Do you miss not having the DSG on the Golf?

Personally I would pop some black gloss alloys on that! Would look naughty!!!  :rolleyes:  some leds rear lights and leave it bar the engine..possibly wind deflectors? the gti inserts for the seats? some gti matts? upgrade interior lights to ledS? sticker here or there. just done exact same to mine  :grin:  the polo looked class!
