Squeel from inside cabin...
« on: 03 February 2015, 17:17 »
I can hear what I consider to be a fuel pump squeal at low speeds low revs when applying a small amount of pressure to the accelerator. It can be heard from inside the cabin, not sure if you can hear it outside properly yet.  Anyone else get it? I cannot hear it if I open the bonnet and just rev the car. I hope its not the turbo charger (it is a 722A turbo) which of course it could as it spools up, which maybe doesn't boost properly when stationary and revving.

Hard to say what sound you're refering to. There will be many noises coming from your bonnet as you press the throttle as valves open ect ect, the soundproofing does it's best to stop many sounds but some get through. You'd know if the turbo was going or gone because it would make a high pitched whistle which would be impossible to ignore.

It is possible that's what it is. Going to try and record it at the weekend.

I'll always remember your recording of the gearbox rattle with your GTD. Would be great to hear your R's squeal!

I'll never forget how confused I was when I moved from the relatively low tech Mk6 GTI to my BMW. Took me nearly a month to understand the car. Soon cars will be so complicated that they will be offering a degree course for them!

The GTD gearbox noise still did that 80,000 miles on. Although it got very notchy near the end, loving the DSG in the R. I don't miss the trying to get it in second gear when its really cold. This  squeal noise just worries me slightly would rather get it fixed before it fails than after.

As one poster has suggested it could be your turbo. When the turbo is about to go you will hear a mechanical crunching noise and within a short time your car will die. Hope it is not this.

However, try and deactivate the 'Sound Actuator' and see if the sound disappears. Worth a punt.

So do I, I will try the sound activator, although it is in normal mode rather than race mode, maybe that's the problem it needs to be in race mode.

Haha yes race mode and the stereo up and it would definitely make the sound disappear :D

But on a serious note a recording with the sound actuator off (normal drive mode) and the climate control switched off would definitely hope to diagnose the problem.

Presumably your R is not one of the early ones, very few of which suffered with blown turbos. Personally, I would not worry too much at the moment. Try deactivating the little bugger that provides the false sound and if the squeal is still there, take it back to the dealer. It might be just how the R is and you have to accept it.
