It stands to reason that any car with keyless is going to be a lot harder on the keyfob battery. It has to do that bit more work than a non-keyless equipped car. Ever look at your keyfob as you press the START button? The little red LED light flashes on the fob. I'm guessing there's a fair bit of 2 way wireless communication going on between the key and the ECU to ensure that the correct key is inside the car!

No but I must have a look now, even leave the car running and walk round to open the garage door with the key in the pocket, so I wonder if things like that have an impact.

My car is now 18mnths old and never had an issue with the batteries in the key fob and that's considering that I've only ever used the one key fob. Something doesn't sound right there.

Ditto. For 6 previous VWs, 5 have had the remote central locking, and i've never had to change a battery.
I still have the original battery's in the remote central locking keys of our two older cars we have had since new. One cars now 11 years old and the other 10 years old, all 4 keys going strong without indicating low battery.
It must have to do with it been keyless, what's the manual say about battery life?

This has happened on my 2nd key fob now which I've used maybe 3 or 4 times since I got the car, so I guess the keyless fobs are always active in some fashion!

My 4 months seems to be below the average lifespan though.

Perhaps VW should use batteries with a greater current capacity (mAh) like Duracell for Keyless cars as there is a greater battery drain.

Lets face it, as nice a car the GTD/GTI/R is VW have massively slipped in their QA department when you count how many things have gone wrong and how many shoddy parts have been installed on the car, just by these forums alone!

And the dealerships love it - all that extra warranty work. Kerching! Seriously though, mire  people come onto forums or public access websites to moan than praise.

Most brand new cars are unreliable - good parts fitted incorrectly or poor parts fitted correctly, doomed to fail, upwards of 10k parts to work together flawlessly in all weather conditions -it's a tall order to have the car absolutely trouble free for 3 years. The real test of reliability for my is longevity of parts once the early failures are out of the way.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....
