Auto Start/Stop Default off....

Is there anyway to default the start/stop system to off and then press the button to enable it if you want to. I have VCDS.

Nope, there only VCDS tweak that is known is to permanently disable the stop start by tricking the car into thinking the parameters are wrong.

Don't you just press the button with the A off button to the left of the gear stick? Or am I not understanding the question properly

That only temporarily disables it. Next time you get in the car it resets so the Stop/Start is active.

I used to like the Stop/Start but the last couple of weeks I have found myself switching it off. Don't really know why!

Mine hardly ever kicks in nowadays. It appears to be very temperamental

In the colder months when you have your heating on - anything more than 16C and 2 bars of fan speed seems to knock mine off when the engine is warm.

Today 0 degrees outside reversed our of the garage put it in park + hand brake it stopped the engine. Whilst I closed the garage door.  Not good.

That's normal. Mine works in minus conditions. Is it not as long as the battery has the power in it?

Seems normal to me too - the only issue I have with it is that it will kick in when the engine is cold and I don't like the idea of stopping and starting an engine soon after initial switch on so I disable it until its warmed up.
