That doesn't sound right. There are many conditions under which the Start/Stop works or not.

The best way to check if/why the Start/Stop is available or not is to press the Car button on the infotainment unit then go to Vehicle Status and then touch the Start/Stop option on the screen. There should be a list of conditions displayed if the Start/Stop is not available such as: engine working temperature not reached yet, battery charge incomplete, climate control working/inside temperature, etc. If all conditions are met, then the message "Start/Stop is available" will be displayed.

The above I have noticed on my GTI over a couple of days of monitoring the system and how it works.

Seems normal to me too - the only issue I have with it is that it will kick in when the engine is cold and I don't like the idea of stopping and starting an engine soon after initial switch on so I disable it until its warmed up.
I agree I just don't think that its good for the engine or the battery to start so soon and then restart. I am not saying I do not want to use it ever, just not right at the start or the end of my journey.

Easy to fix that, just push the Stop/Start off button as soon as you've started up for the first time so it doesn't cut out while its warming up.

I often do that, and re-enable it when the oil temp is at its normal operating level.

I looked for a way of disabling it in VCDS on my Passat, but had no luck.

After a few weeks of driving the car I learned to come off the brake pedal the instant Auto Hold took over, so the engine doesn't stop. It's all about being light on the brake pedal and easing off just enough so that you don't get the 'bob' when the car comes to rest, but having enough pressure for the Auto Hold to take over.

It's only occasionally that the engine stops and that's embarrassingly when I'm parking. Holding the footbrake when going from D to R it stops, then starts up again when I tap the come off the brake pedal, making it look as if I've stalled.

Stick with it and you'll develop your own drive around without having to resort to pressing the button.

Try this if you have VCDS - apparently does not work on all cars

Permanently Disable Start-Stop

Available with VCP (Vag Can Pro) as an OCF (One Click Function)

Tested by antera on 2014.5MY cars and works with VCDS as below

·         Go to Module 19 (Can Gateway)
·         Adaption
·         Go to  Kanaal: Start_stop_voltage_limit
·         change to  12.1V ( standard is 7.6V)

The Start-Stop will show as disabled because the energy requirement from the car is too high, which is not an error but a valid reason for SS to be disabled.

I don't know why your cars behave like this with regards to the Start/Stop but my car cuts out even with the Auto Hold engaged. The brake lights will stay on and all the other consumers such as headlights, wipers, infotainment, etc will still work. The only thing that stops working is the servo on the steering.

What i have noticed strange though is if you are at a traffic light, start/stop engaged and you use the wipers and press the clutch at the same time, while the engine resumes, the wipers will stop in the up position for a second. I'm guessing it cuts out power to them when the engine re-starts.

The brake lights will stay on...

This would annoy me almost as much as the driver behind me. At least with my B7 DSG Passat, when I come off the brake pedal, the brake lights go off. If I'm at the back of the queue I want my brake lights on, but as soon as someone is behind me, I'd like them to be off. Just like rear fog lights, but that's for another ranting thread.

Does auto hold really keep the brake lights illuminated, so much to learn about this car.

Its not a fix, more of a compromise, but if you pull up on the handbrake button, ie. turning your P to red from green, it turns the lights off. I often forget to do it but if in long stationary traffic i do it out of courtesy of the bloke behind me.

More interesting info, I find the manual for the mk7 shocking really.

I don't want to fully disable the auto start/stop it has its uses, just not on my 5 mile commute at the very start and the very end especially in this cold weather.
