I'm not sure having never ordered a new VW but I imagine if they're in the accessory line then they would've been fitted by the dealer possibly? So the car could've come from the factory with different wheels which they dealer swapped with these before the first owner took delivery? Or a previous owner has bought these accessory wheels after the original order and changed them at some point in their ownership?

You cannot order them from the factory but you can order them from new on a new car order as a dealer fit accessory.
Many options why they are on your car have been given but another reason the original owner may have speced them over factory option wheels are that the factory and factory option wheels had a polished surface. Which corrodes, if the original buyer of the car had had hassle with this type of wheel finish in the past they may have wanted to avoid any polished/machined finished surface on a wheel.This I can understand and I did the same from new and avoided this type of finish wheel when ordering and even looked at the wheels you have as an alternative at the time for mine.
What you need to see is the original bill of sale to see if they were fitted from new or not. The suppling dealer maybe able to help you with this if they are kind enough too as im guessing you dont have this.

Its nothing to do with the wheels unless they are both damaged. Why would different wheels cause excessive tyre wear.. Think about it?

Assuming they are not damaged, then you either had nasty tyres fitted or a misalingned rear end. The latter is most likely.

The question is why have the wheels been replaced? If the originals were so battered that they needed replacing, who knows what else got bent behind them.

spoke to the previous owner (he had it new) said he needed a quick delivery(so picked a spec available from dealer stock)  but didn't want diamond finish so the supplying dealer gave him a vw book to pick alternative wheels from, they swapped the wheels for him, he also confirmed to car had not been in any accidents, said he kept it till 15k miles then traded it in at the garage i bought it from against a audi. it had 15,156 miles on when i picked it up, so sounds proppa
