Snoopy: I think a fair few of those teenagers are leasers on the ridiculously cheap deals. There are a few there swapping ancient Corsas and Clios for a Golf R. I have to wonder how long it'll be before a fair few of them end up in a ditch or stuck out of a tree. They'll be in for a treat while it lasts.

Their next car after the 24 month R lease will end up costing them twice as much on a monthly basis if that cheap lease deal was a one-off with the Germans tempting us car-loving Brits to get into cheaper Rs in the short term and help out their stalling economy.

A nearly new Cayman was also a real possibility for me, but as a current one car household, I talked myself into the practical option (and almost new Caymans weren't nearly as cheap as I thought they might be, was expecting 75-80% of RRP for a year old one).

I leased a 5 Door DSG R on a 3 year Business Lease. Got a brilliant deal from my Local VW Dealer, added nearly £3k of options and it costs me just £3.95k inc VAT per year (Total £11.85k inc VAT). Just could not resist such a deal. So not all leasers are young p!ssers who cannot p!ss straight! Hope I am forgiven for being a leaser.

Of course you are forgiven, this is not that kind of forum.  But there will be plenty of 18-20 year olds jumping on a cheap lease that've never had more than 100ps at their disposal jumping into an R.

If the numbers made massive sense to me and I didn't have the GTD to get rid of, i'd have leased too. As mine will be bought outright, i'm not copping for tons of interest, which helps even things up. I'd never discount the lease option by some form of snobbery. I always consider the 2/3 year cost of ownership by all means available.

I might even go for the 5 year extended warranty and keep it 4 years then sell privately with a year's warranty remaining. I really can't see anything better out there in this price bracket - i'd have to spend an extra £10k to do better, and the MK8 will be out by then (maybe even a MK4 Scirocco).

Just been having a look there. Now it is called the VW R owners club, or VW ROC, which makes it sound like a Scirocco forum. They also have a warning points system onboard, I have no warning points.

Zero points for me so far (not visible to other posters), though I was warned for writing a short response on the Dynaudio thread. My response to a question was short (3 words) as I was on my iPhone but it was in no way rude.

Interesting thread and one that surprises me.

I've been a member of VWROC for years and apart from the odd fool its a decent place.

All forums have idiots, I'm sure you've your fair share, but if you think its a bit rough then you've never been on Piston Heads......

It is a lot better now than it was pre-change, I quite enjoy going there now. One of the old mods who is no longer there was part of a group of 6 or 7 members that seemed to be out to bash all newcomers, allowing them to do so and actively participating in it himself. Some of the persecution and derision of leasers that still happens is more than a little questionable though.

Yeah the mod is question was, in retrospect, a wrong choice and 'left' the forum......

As for the other baiting, yes there is a member being goaded aka custard test etc, however the tables are turning and most members think he's a good bloke for not rising to it!!
