Hi,

I had a very similar experience at one of the big tyre places. Mine was only on one wheel and I noticed it before I left. The guy was OK about it, as I made a point of the wheels being in tip top condition. In my case they paid to get the wheel refurbished through my local VW dealer who offer a Monday drop off for Wednesday collection on diamond cut repairs. It cost £95 per wheel, which was refunded to my by the tyre place. VW wouldn't tell me who they use, only that it was in Kent and wasn't lepsons. You wouldn't know the wheel had been repaired unless you really look for it.

If you don't get any joy at the place, take to Twitter and post a picture of the wheels showing the damage they have done, then they will likely get in touch.

This was the same place who setup the wheel alignment for a mk6 golf and didn't own up to not having the mk7 parameters until I questioned the printed alignment report which stated golf mk6!

Needless to say I am new very particular about where I get my wheels done!!

Hope you get it sorted!!

Cheers,
Phil

VW usually use Lepsons in Gillingham, Kent. Canterbury dealer definitely uses them as they told me. One of the best in the country for diamond cut refurbs.  Wonder who they used instead?

Twitter and Facebook is a good shout.

Hope you get some joy out of them Craig.

It's a chain of of garages but not as big as Kwik Fit. I've made a school boy error in not taking pictures before I took the car in but I did wash all 4 wheels and it was clear from our walk round the car that they were in top condition.

I've sent an email off just in the last few minutes to voice my displeasure and I'll be round first thing tomorrow to hear what they have to say. I don't want to mention them just now cause if they do the honourable thing and have them repaired then I'll respect that but if they refuse then I'll name and shame.

Even with a polish they won't get any better. Those marks look like cut into the lacquer to me and in time you might get the well known white worm (quite common on Monza wheels from MK5 GTIs). Judging by the position of the scratches I believe they were done when they used the air gun to screw in the bolts.

I have the same fear to be fair, just bought a set of PSS last week and I still haven't fitted them to the wheels because I'm not too keen on getting the wheels scratched. Last time I've had a bad experience with my local Mr. Tyre garage, they scratched my diamond cut OZ wheels on my Megane. I said I will never again go to them. Can anyone recommend a decent place to fit tyres to diamond cut wheels without scratching them?

I got michelin pilot sports from Costco when they were on offer, worked out £100 a corner I think. Fantastic tyre compared to the conti's that my car came with

How did you get on Craig?  Just catching up on some posts - that is outrageous, I bet you're fuming.  I really don't understand how they've f-ed it up so badly.  Unreal.  Have you had any luck?

So went down yesterday morning to speak with the manager about the damage and when I arrived he acknowledged that he had received my email and that the damage was unacceptable. He examined the wheels and without actually admitting guilt did agree that the wheels were not in that condition when I had left the car with them. He said he was a bit baffled by the position of the damage as would have expected any damage to have been inside the wheelnut holes. He's asked that I bring the car back in on Saturday to allow his area manager to have a look but Sod's law im away to Newcastle on Saturday for the rugby.

If he doesn't phone me to arrange another date then I'll keep on pestering him until I get some appropriate compensation. To say I'm miffed is an understatement. Had the car for 2.5yrs and in all that time never had the slightest bit of damage to any wheel and now all 4 of them are scratched to bugger .

Craig it looks like to me that they put the wheel face down on their machine which is usually full of bits of weights / broken valves etc.

I had similar when I took my Mk6 into Arnold Clark. I think the manager thought I was at it and just looking for new alloys. he took me into the workshop to look at the process and it was clear to me how they could have been damaged but he denied it. In the end I machine polished them and they were as good as new.

The good thing here is you took the manager out to look round the car beforehand so they are basically taking ownership of the state of the car / wheels until it is handed back to you. Both of you would have had to be blind not to notice that before.

I've had loads of problems with alloys on various cars in the last few years. From fitters removing the old weights with what looked like chisels, leaving gouges on the inside of the wheel, to scratches and scores on the face of the alloy.

I just recently changed my 2 fronts and was paranoid beforehand so I removed the weights myself to stop any chance of that happening but the fitters were great. They really took care of the alloys / car. I used Costco.

Let us know how you get on.

Someone explain again why the Michelin's are such a good tyre when the fuel is always an F compared to say a Dunlop which is category C. I've got Dunlop's on my Tiguan and the test drive car I drove had pirellis on which gave better move but had a worse fuel rating.
