Never mind the re-maps...
« on: 13 November 2014, 15:55 »
Yeah, yeah, dyno lottery and all that, but unless there's a conspiracy at work is it coincidence that the GTI in stock form is way above its published BHP figure? Ignore the remapped 'after' figures and look at the 'standard'

(Disclaimer: I know the GTI is out of fashion now as last week it was possible to get an R for 50p a month and this week it's all about having a 400bhp Golf, but allow me a bit of indulgence!)

DTUK:

REVO:

AMD:

Superchips:

With only APR as the party poppers at a mere 230 ish:

And yes, all just for a bit of fun before the sparks fly!!!

That's also why the after remap results are higher than they should be. A GTI is definitely not running at 260BHP stock, all tuners use optimistic dynos because people always look at the after figure, which is also higher than reality.

Take mine for example it measured 230bhp as it should do at standard and 295BHP after the remap. Put my car on the tuning manufacturers dyno and it'd measure 250before & 315-320 after :P All marketing!
Current - MK7 Golf GTI - Tornado Red, 5 Door, DSG, Performance Pack, Dynamic Chasis Control, Panoramic Sunroof, Discover Navigation, Dynaudio.

On Order - MK7 Golf R - Pearlescent Black, 3 Door, DSG, Vienna Leather, Discover Nav Pro, Rear View Camera, High Beam Assist, Keyless Entry, Dynaudio (Tech Pack)

All gone.

Now;

MK7 Golf R - Lapiz Blue, 5 Door, DSG, Carbon Nappa, Discover Nav Pro.

Assuming that stock GTI is really banging out spot on 220ps, that "70ps" is more like 61.9ps, because the dyno is reading at 113% of reality. We'll never know though whether it's really putting out 210/220/230ps. Around 60ps gain sounds about right.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

The only effective use for a dyno is to give a before and after comparison of your tuning efforts...

Unless, of course, you like "willy waving" in the pub on a Friday night...

Agree with this, marketing. They could have put race fuel in the car and called it 93 Octane...

There are numerous factors that can influence the readings from a dyno, some are more accurate than others purely down to operator setup.

When you hear all this 'its putting out well over stock figures', its mostly forum talk and has never been verified. VW is probably quite specific about the final power output give or take a small percentage of variance.

Yeah, I just posted this up for a bit of fun.

I was sat reading a thread on Briskoda during a boring night shift which highlighted to me that Superchips now have an OBD map out for the GTI which is the first one I've seen which actually quotes for 95RON fuel (albeit rather optimistically). It just made me think how the tuners have to market their wares which in turn makes the standard car seem more powerful going by the graphs.
The only graph I left out there was GIAC as they quote wheel horsepower.

Anyway, as I was reading the Briskoda thread I sat thinking back to my first mk6 GTI which ran REVO software which was rolling roaded on my car on a conservative roller at 260bhp and theres no darn way on this Earth my mk7 is as powerful out of the factory as that car was (it was a very quick car). I also had occasional use of a Bluefinned mk6 GTI which also wasn't anywhere near as powerful as that REVO'd mk6 but was much smoother to drive.

There are some examples dotted about history where cars generally produced more than stock. In the 90s the German manufacturers had a gentlemen's agreement about a certain class of cars not putting out more than 193bhp. It was widely shown that, for example, the BMW 328i of that era put out well in excess of 210bhp from the factory... similarly some Japanese cars of the 90s put out more than stock from the factory because they were supposed to be limited by regulation to certain power outputs...

Modern, mass produced cars are normally believed to be close to their official outputs...
