Road Rash Repair
« on: 04 November 2014, 20:19 »
This question has been asked before but I haven't been able to find the correct answer.

My 2010 GTI has a severe case of road rash, most of them on the bonnet along the front part, just above the headlights. The colour is DPB and I can see that all the chips are white but they're tiny.

What's a good procedure to remove them myself? Have looked at two kits, Chipex and Paints4u.

Chipex seems to be very easy to use, but have seen mixed reviews so looks like a bit of hit and miss. It also seems like a very quick process (although this could be bad for final results of course!)

Paints4u seems to have better reviews and is cheaper. I don't have a polishing machine so I'm very nervous about using a wet & dry paper but also it seems it will take a lot of elbow grease to polish all the light sanding.

Any suggestions?

Buy matching touch up paint from VW or a spray can and a set of children's fine paint brushes as the touch up brush is often too large. Clean the area with a mild abrasive polish (no need to use wet and dry for small chips and abrasive polish is generally more gentle so less likely to get it wrong). I use T-cut original as it does not leave a polish residue so can be painted straight away. Put paint in the chips. If using a spray can, spray a little paint in a container and use this with the brush. Probably need to do it a couple of times to fill the chip. Wait for it to dry fully. (A hair drier is useful to help the drying process but don't let the missus see you!!) Use a polishing cloth wrapped around an old credit card to keep it flat and follow the bodywork contours, put some T-cut on the cloth and gently polish to get the paint surface smooth. The T-cut will remove any over paint around the chip. Takes a while but I find the results very good. Got a red car and carbon grey.
Mk6 GTI Carbon Grey, 2010 Bluetooth and voice fitted, a few VCDS mods still a comfortable family car. Red Scirocco 2011 twin charger stage 1 - enjoyable drive now gone.  White 2016 Polo GTI (roller skate on steroids) replaced with an Indium Grey 2019 7.5 GTI PP.

Thanks for the help, I'll give it a go if and when the weather permits!
