Competition for the VW GTI & R - Pic Heavy
« on: 02 November 2014, 20:12 »
Hey guys,

There's been a lot of talk about the GTI vs the R lately and I thought we should talk about the GTI and R vs it's rivals for a change! Was going to post this in the general section but since it's competition aimed at the MK7 I put it in here.

Just saw the new Honda Civic Type R TV Ad and it got me thinking. Theres a lot of upcoming cars being released. Here are the competitors coming out over the next couple of years! Any of you guys going to be tempted to switch sides?

Honda Civic Type R - 2015

Rumoured to have 290BHP from it's 2 litre 4 cylinder turbo-charged engine and priced at £30,000. This is definitely gunning for the GTI and clipping on the back heels of the R.

Ford Focus RS - 2017

Recently it's been claimed that the RS is copying the trend and moving down to a 2L 4 cylinder turbo-charged engine and rumoured to have a minimum of 330BHP with a clever front diff to handle the power it's most certainly got it's sights set firmly on the R. The car's already been spotted on the Nurburgring so chances are it may be released earlier than expected!

Peugeot 308 R - 2016

Rumoured to be pushing 270BHP from a 1.6 Turbo.

Thoughts?

Oh and I almost forgot the new Audi RS3 to be released soon with a 5 cylinder engine and AWD. It'll definitely be going up against the R.

Im not into batmobiles so the new competition does not interest me. What does is the R400 & RS3 though.

Yes I forgot to mention the new Audi RS3. That's going to be difficult to beat, much better sound because of the 5 cylinder engine and AWD, very tempting. I'm really hoping the R400 does make it into the UK, I know it's been confirmed for production but seems to good to be true.

Haha, I know exactly what you mean Jimble. It looks stunning in my opinion. The best thing is, it looks just as good in real life as it does on the concept pics

I do quite like the look of both the Type R and RS  . The Peugeot doesn't do anything for me at all. If your comparing rivals for the GTI/R then I don't know if you can include the RS3 and the rumoured R400 as both will be in a different price bracket, i.e. high £30k's

True. I'm guessing you'd quite easily be seeing 40K with a spec'd up R400. I'm surprised that Ford are sticking with FWD for the new RS. I think they have a point to prove that you can get bags of power through those front wheels effectively after all.

Looks wise, too highly stylised for my liking, no matter what's under the bonnet.  Trouble is they'll look dated quite quickly, not an issue if you change cars very frequently.  Prefer the understated sleeper looks of the R.  These look too much like wannabes even if they're not.

Type R looks great on the exterior but I think Honda make poor interiors especially with their dials. I wonder what it'd look like.

I think they look great, and will probably be great drivers cars. But as I'm mid forties now and will be late forties by the time they're released I'd look a bit of a twit driving one! Ok, fair point, and even bigger twit.

Mind you the R400 looks quite lairy and I think they are valid in this equation as you'll probably be able to lease one for £2k down and 50pence a month like you can an R…
