I think they look great, and will probably be great drivers cars. But as I'm mid forties now and will be late forties by the time they're released I'd look a bit of a twit driving one! Ok, fair point, and even bigger twit.

Mind you the R400 looks quite lairy and I think they are valid in this equation as you'll probably be able to lease one for £2k down and 50pence a month like you can an R…

Agree they'll probably be a blast to drive, but sadly (driver) age is a factor that cannot be ignored, same goes for middle aged men and women driving cabriolets.

And me thinks you protesteth too much about the R, that you secretly covet one

Ha ha ha! It's all ironic humour for me Mme Booth, I just see the funny side of it and make no secret of my huge admiration of the R.
If I'd not just moved house I'd likely be searching out a deal on one now myself (subject to seeing if the power delivery suits me as well as a modded GTI would).
I'd not lease one though and as my GTI was bought cash I'd not be able to hunt out a bargain PCP deal so I don't know where I'd actually fit in as a purchaser balancing out depreciation etc.
Who knows what the future holds but for the interim I'm just a little perplexed and find the whole situation of being able to hire one for less than a base model supermini and find it highly amusing.

You never know, I might have a mad moment one day but only if I could get a really sound price on the GTI

Friend has a 2 year old Civic Type R and cannot fault it really, its a car you definitely would be happy owning and know he loves his and would never turn to anything else.

Personally think the next model Type R model is too much for me personally in looks, more into the wolf in sheeps clothing style.

Exterior styling obviously plays a big part in the choosing but as you spend all your driving time looking at and sitting in the interior then the Ford would be an instant turn off for interior alone unless there is a huge change from what they doing now which doubt.

Peugeot do not even get a look when choosing and this one hardly compels you to change that thinking though my one and only experience in a 306 was probably the worst drive ever experienced so admit to being quite anti before even think about them.

My next car choice is an S3 or R or may seem strangely a Tiguan R

keeping the GTD so going to really test drive the R and S3 to see if my day to day drivng experience is going to be different enough in how personally makes me feel, if not then will let wife have her way and get a Tiguan.

Will also do the normal marguee showroom look around at BMW, Mercedes and cars mentioned here but cannot really see anything that comes in 2016 that will dissuade me from the 3 mentioned.

I actually quite like the Peugeot styling wise (ignoring paint job), I see a lot of 'normal' 308's around and they're handsome enough in a restrained way, and I hate to admit it but I also think the RCZ is a pretty car. My last experience of a Pug was a 306 GTI-6 which was a cracking car to drive but the friend that owned it didn't keep it long due to quality issues and that goes back to my only Peugeot ownership period which was a 1989 205 GTI 1.9 which I had back in about 1991. It drove really well but was really dodgy in the build quality department. I doubt much has changed.

The Civic just screams Manga or various Playstation street racing games and you'd expect it to be reliable and drive like a playstation game too, and you can't say it doesn't throw off Honda's dowdy image! It would be nice to think some of the excessive bodywork bits shown in the pics were optional extras and that the actual Type-R would be a bit more palatable for us staid Brits.

The Ford just looks like a sporty Ford so will appeal to the type of people that like sporty Fords. The horrible snout aside it looks quite nice but we just know it will be a dogs dinner inside.

And I guess that's the way a lot of people will see it on here, we drive VW's because we don't like 'brash' too much and VW make their cars the way they do because they know their market.
Personally I'm looking forward to the RS3 Audi but I won't be able to afford one, not even close.

The most recent one doesn't drive near as well as the old R, as they cut costs aggressively, losing the multilink rear suspension and interior niceties in the process. Civic R has always been the boyracers car of choice once they get cheap enough, lots of old and new trying it on with the GTD as it'd probably be a fair duel (lots of torque vs 17ps advantage. once they get in the 6-7k rev range). The DTUK box really shows them up. As the new R looks to be nigh-on twice the price of the old one , i'll presume it handles a lot better.

If I was in the market for a train wreck plastic toy with hoon appeal, I'd be after one of the Renault Sport Meganes to be honest.

With all the silly race toys and an uber aggressive styling, it ticks of "those" boxes in my mind and Renault always have the full on race styling compared to the rest (not that its for me - several friends have Renaultsports and they are nasty to live with day to day)

But all of these things are not German badges and German badges are where the klass comes in, sets the chavs apart from the rest ;-)

I'm too old to be a boy racer, I'll take my performance with a side order of wurst and sauerkraut now ;-)

Can't argue with what's been said however with the Type R likely to be priced round the £30k mark then i doubt many boy racers will be able to afford the new one. On the other hand the Golf R with these ridiculous lease prices runs the risk of attracting some interesting customers

CraigW: Yes there are a few people on the R forum that are chopping in battered and elderly French Superminis with the standard shopping trolley 1.2 engines that are moving into a leased R - that'll be a hell of a step-up for them. The fuelling might come as a shock though. The leasing offers look to be gone now and the lease rates have shot up - I do think VW have allowed the cheap deals to go through to get the R out there in the public's interest. Will be interesting to see if those lease rates see a repeat anytime soon.
